I'm getting sick of the 1000 yard goal

you DO realise that the drop on a 308 180 is something like 4 feet or better at 400-500- yards- and that's zerod for 250- that's why I glaze over when I c 1000 yard claims- most of us can't hit 6, let alone 1k-

you DO realize that it is possible for some though right?

I can hit 600m consistently. Heck I won the steel match on the BCRA championship this year. 10 plates 8" plates knocked down (6/10 were me), we were the only other team to actually hit all 10 plates. That was my fourth time shooting at 600 meters too.

I have more than enough elevation on my turret left to reach 1000 without a rail ~14.5 mrad. Probably could hit something at 1000, if I had the chance. in 2 weeks I'll have the opportunity to shoot to 850 yards @ rattlesnake..

Figure I should add, that at the end of this month it will be 1 year since I started shooting a bolt action and long range.

I know that if you use a 175 grain matchking in a properly TUNED m14 with the bipod , moving at 2550 fps 1/12 twist you CAN hit the 1000 yard gong- it's documented in zediker and that was years ago when the us army marksmanship team was using 14s- but these are guys that do this 4 a living and 10x scopes with properly cut cams for the drops- in other words EVERY aspect of the situation had been taken into account- same with the 308 COMPETITION guys- but lets face it - the average guy ( ie joe hunter) with a run of the mill hunting rifle is NOT GOING TO GET ANYWHERE NEAR THAT- most of the time they can't tell u what the bullet drop is out at 4-500- so it's bullchit

Well, clearly, making hits on targets at distance really does depend on equipment and user ability doesn't it. This forum is for the Black and Green precision rifles (such as the HB factory offerings from the big manufacturers and the TRG's PGW's and such like) and all should be capable with right glass and ammo of making that distance in the hands of a person who is capable. Honestly the 'rant' really ought to have been posted in, perhaps, the section for hunting rifles ?

I don't think the OP is referring to people like you. You may have only started a year ago but how much time/money have you sunk into it? You clearly spend time and money on this hobby. Your DTA and TT are not a M700 and Leupold...

This is not to say that it can't be done with a 700 and Leupold either. I think (correct me if I am wrong) he is saying that a guy just can't go out spend $1,000 and 10 minutes and then go bang steel at 1,000 yards. If someone can do it, it is because they practice and work at it.

To each their own. You have to have a goal. I started with making small groups at 100 then 200 then 300m. Now, when I can I try to make small groups at 5 or 600m. I'll be happy to score more hits than misses at 800m when I get there. But once there, what's the new goal?

Just my thoughts. The results you get depend on the effort you make.

I do it with my 700 5R milspec pushing 175 gr pills.
Have it on video and backed up by a couple people on this forum.

Only mods I did was glass bedding and tweaked my trigger. I am running better glass (Nightforce). But it is not an expensive rig.

I dont think anyone is arguing that it is not possible to do it with a 700. We all know it can. I guess my point is you cant simply sum it up like it is in the first post. YES there are some people that love to exaggerate their skill level. That is not unique to longer distance shooting. Those people are in ever discipline.

Shooting 1000yards really isnt that hard....

I think its great practice and a great skill to be able to shoot out to 1000 yards. Would I ever make a shot in a hunting situation out to 1000, hell no. Not saying there is anything wrong with it, just personally, I'll close some distance and increase my odds of a perfect shot and a clean kill.

In my part of the country its hard enough to find a shot over 200 yards, let alone find the room to practice on out to 1000!
