Hunting ELK in New Zealand. Roosevelt gifted them to NZ in 1905----- its been a struggle but they are now their own Beast--- Crossed with Red Deer , the Fiordland WAPITI is real.
I drew the 1st Period in a Block that has history (which one doesnt) but its not a "Core" block but it is neighbouring the Core blocks----
Check out this website for some info on them, the FWF foundation has put alot of time an money into saving these animals for rec hunting during the Ballot in Wilderness area of Fiordland, Deep South NZ--- Where the MOOSE were let go too!
Im real excited------ being first period.
They dont Bugle per say but a mix between ROAR an BUGLE making them very unique!
hit up youtube an google for Fiordland Wapiti for a rainy day to get up to speed!
im taking my kimber 7-08 an expecting bush hunting rather than open tops....but first period is late March- so may not be Rutting an may catch odd one out on top with lack of pressure!!
For Non resident this Ballot cost $150 to enter an $600 for the Tag if successful.... SO WAY out of my norm, although i am a fan of the FWF an the history of the Wapiti im happy to play , the experience alone, 10 days in fiordland during their 'mating season' excites me!!
