Ok i put a level on the base made sure the rifle was sitting dead level in the vice , then i mounted the scope set my eye relief and put a level on the top turret got that dead on level and tightened it all down and rechecked it . But now my crosshairs are very unlevel looking does this mean i have a defective scope?

Loosen your ring cap bolts a bit and see if the reticle becomes straight.

If yes, you have a wonky ring set up.

Something isn't in alignment and tightening the ring is bending your scope. All too common unfortunately.

My solution is to use a set of Burris Sig ZEE rings with inserts. No more bent scope tubes and not more ring marks.

I do not lap rings nor suggest shooters do.

Exactly, I had this happen many times before I finally decided to buy quality rings

None of my Nightforce turrets are level with the reticles.

I set the gun to level then look through the scope to achieve (what my eye perceives as) level since I use a dot reticle and have no "crosshair" to use as a guide.

If you have a cross hair, take a plumb line to the range, mount your rifle level with a bubble level on the top of the rail then adjust the crosshair to match the plumb line.

im using burris xtr rings they look decent

Alot of factory actions are not true due in part to the warping that can occur in the heat treat process. There are also times when the scope base mounting holes are not straight and centered.

If the action is not true and you are using 2 pcs bases, there is no hope that your rings will be true no matter what brand you use.

Thus the process of lapping rings. Again, not something I recommend.

You can ease this issue by using a strong 1 pcs rail but you are still at risk of a surface that is not straight.

With the Burris rings with inserts, I never have to worry about how wonky the stuff is. The inserts take up the slack and the scope body is always unstressed.

Works for me.
