I flew to SA a few years ago with British Air. Went through Heathrow to Jo'burg with no issues. In SA you have to go through an inspection station but nothing onerous. Air Canada will charge you that stupid fee to transport firearms.

I do believe that passing through the UK with your firearm is not a big issue, however, stopping in country with one will be a bureaucratic nightmare, especially if you are not going with a licensed guide. Better off to let your rifle pass through the UK if you can and borrow one there. AFAIK, firearms (permits, etc.) are not a big issue in SA, hell you can hunt with a handgun there if you want.

Please let us know what you find out. I have hunted SW England, but I borrowed a rifle.

In the UK to bring in your firearm it will need to comply with UK law, no self loaders/semi autos unless shotguns. You will need a sponsor and a booked/confirmed shoot but that is simple. You can shoot deer all year round here, just need the right species. No tags or licenses required in England and wales and you can borrow a rifle under the estate rifle rules. That may make life simple. I have sponsored before and teach deer stalking here in the south east of England.

If I was flying to RSA I would take the direct flight through JFK or Dulles. Apparently getting the permits isn't a big issue - as easy as getting a NY State hunting license which allows you to get the papers to import the firearm to the States. Then it's as easy as a 13 hour flight to Jo'burg. Flying through Europe just makes for a long haul. FWIW when I went to RSA in 2007 I flew through Frankfurt and had no issues with my rifles. The Germans are, apparently, the easiest of the bunch to get along with when it comes to firearms.
