I'm in the middle of deciding between 2 red rifles at the moment.

2 red rifles both of which I want in my arsenal eventually. The Mosin Nagant 91/30 and the SVT-40. Big difference I know, in function and in price. Basically I'm trying to decide what one to get first. I do notice the SVT 40 has risen in price some. Maybe I should grab one before it rises even higher. The Mosin is a great old bolt action and who doesn't love one of those? Half the cost and probably way easier to clean. What would you pick?

Grab them both. Not really a question to pause on.

To be more serious, get the SVT-40 first. They ARE getting harder to come by. My local store hasn't had 'em about 5-6 months. I have heard because of the whole Ukraine issue right now, there are no more shipments coming in for the foreseeable future. So yeah, buy the SVT-40 first.

Mosins are still largely available, and will likely be, for the next year, at least... Y'know, assuming we don't lose EVERYTHING October 20th....

SVT's are a joy to shoot. Mosin's (if in good condition) MAY be more accurate, but not as much fun. Mosin's though,do double duty, if you ever need a sledge hammer or something similar to destroy cinder blocks.

BOTH
Just do yourself a favour and buy both and a crate of 7.62X54R and giv'er.
The only words of advice I can give you is in my own personal experience the SVT hates good ammo. I had some "good" (can't remember the make) ammo for my Nagant and it WOULD NOT work in the SVT. The case kept jamming in the chamber. Bought a crate (well actually 4) of surplus and it runs through it like water.

SVT 40. I personally dont see the attraction in Mosins. I always see dudes at the range pull them out, shoot them a few times,.. look at the people firing semi autos next to them,... put the Mosin away and dig out the SKS for the remainder of the day lol

I do warn you though, the SVT 40 is a bear to clean and keep in pristine condition if your running corrosive!

Im leaning toward the SVT. Is the Mosin that much more powerful? Because of barrel length? Keeping a rifle clean is my middle name. Anything I need to know about the gas system on the SVT regarding first use?

I always shoot at least 50-100 rds per time I bring either of them out. I personaly would say buy both, but if not option buy svt, while still cheapish. price on svt risen 100-150$ in last year

if you do get an SVT, id recommend buying the stainless steel gas piston set from Corwin, and a gas adjustment tool aswell, unless you plan on making one (the gas nut is pentagon shaped so building one can be tricky). When you first shoot your SVT, id adjust the gas setting to 1.1, shoot it (it will most likely not cycle) and start increasing it one setting at a time (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc.) until you get reliable cycling. the SVT 40 is a REALLY long gun because of its 24" barrel which i believe is the same as a standard Mosin. But because the SVT's have generous muzzle brakes, the shooter doesnt feel as much recoil as a Mosin. The muzzle brakes make the SVT's un-goddly loud to shoot. The SVT's with 6 port brakes are easily the loudest gun i own and one of the loudest guns ive ever heard lol.

Get the svt first, get one from Martin at Corwin Arms. The last svt I picked up was from him, it's in beautiful shape and it shoots pretty accurately too boot. I didn't think I'd like the mosin as much as I do but I've got two of them now, they see more use lately than my svt's. I really love shooting them, my new 42 project has turned out to be a really solid shooter and will get an optic of some sort.

Get both if you can, I really like the x54r round. So having two models of rifle that shoot it is a bonus, I'd like a m38 at some point. I don't find cleaning an svt any worse than an sks, svt has a couple extra small parts to deal with but its straight forward once you do it a few times.

Ditto

If you are anal about cleaning guns the SVT-40 will take longer but it makes you appreciate the overall design of the gun. My 91/30s and M44s are also fun to shoot. I know people say they are loud but wearing my surefire plugs, I don't really notice. Once you get one Ruskey gun; you will want more.

Don't these come with a gas wrench? Along with an oil bottle and cleaning kit? If not do I have to make one or can I use something else? Would be nice not to have to wait for one in the mail but I will if I have to I guess..

Order the wrench when you order the gun and save on shipping charges.

Won't be ordering the gun, will pick one up after work tomorrow at wholesale sports for $100 less than most I've seen on line. I'd like to buy from Corwin but that would mean paying almost $500. $359.99 vrs $474.00. That's a big difference. I'd like to take that extra hundred and by shot gun ammo as well.

Lever Arms has great prices on SVT40's. The one I got from them had a perfect bore and shoots great! I've hit 2" at 100M with irons more than a few times and always less than 3".

They don't usually come with the gas wrench, either order the tool set from Corwin or grab the cross bolt wrench and gas wrench from Lever. They have Arsenal originals for an ok price if you can drop in and pick up. Really look it over before you buy, check the bore if you can. The tighter it is in the stock will be an important factor as well, although you can shim behind the action at the recoil lug and at the front handguard where the front band is. You want the front band to be tight as possible, shim with card stock or some such material.

Have fun with it once you get the gas setting dialed in, nothing better than an accurate svt. It's so much fun to shoot, I love ringing my 80 & 100yrd 8" gongs with mine. Awesome battle rifle.

Russian Rifles are great! I have m44 & m91/30.. Russian SKS... need a SVT 40 as well...sucks prices are climbing...well, for those who dont own one yet that is! & What about extra mags? Pretty hard to come by, but they use strippers...
