Hey all I'm lacking a 40 cal in my lineup. I have no real purpose for one but since I have 20-25-30-35-45-50 with multiples in some I feel empty without one.
What is everyone using for a 40 cal? Factory or wildcat don't matter as long as brass isn't to tricky to form
My thoughts were Jrc in 40 SW or a bolt gun like a 40/300. I'm open to all ideas

What's this 40/300 you speak off ?? I was wanting a .405 Winchester but since the oil bubble bust and the fires $ is kinda tight.

300 wm necked to 40 with no other changes. Similar to the 416 Taylor just slightly skinnier.

The Taylor would be much easier and dies are available but it's not quite a true 40

Interesting that the 40 cal gap bothers you but the 22, 6mm, 277, 7 mm, 8mm, 338, and 375 are all notable in their absence. You've got years of gap filling in front of you. ;).

Here's an idea - a .40-65 Falin (.408") made from .444 Marlin brass, chambered in an 1875 Sharps or a Ruger #1. Dies and bullet moulds are available from RCBS. The .40-65 Falin in a C. Sharps rifle was used to duplicate Billy Dixon's famous 7/8ths of a mile shot at Adobe Walls.

Another vote for the 405 Win, common, lots of modern brass available, Hornady makes relatively cheap bullets for it and if you want a bolt gun a P-14 makes a perfect platform.........levergun is the 95 Win or Miroku copy..........single shots available in the #1. But the 405 is not technically a true 40 cal at .411. Then there is the 450-400 NE...........the 404 Jeffries although not a true 40 at .423, the 38-40 is a true 40, as is the 40-72 and 40-82, but much harder to get brass and bullets for. Of course with wildcats your options are limitless............If a pistol cartridge fills your void then again there is the 38-40 as well as the 40 S&W and the best of all is the 10mm.
In a wildcat, the one that may peak my interest would be a 400-350 RM or 400 WSM as a short barreled (18-20"), short action thumper, with a 1-4 scope. Short, light, handy, easy to carry and "Hammer of Thor" power.

This has piqued my interest. Do you own such a p14 or know a gunsmith who builds them?

Unfortunately c_90, the gunsmith that I knew for sure could do this passed away last fall.............I personally do not own a P-14 or 17 any more...........not a big fan of old military actions, but I do know the 14 was designed to use a rimmed cartridge and it wouldn't be a great deal of work to rebarrel one and get it to feed. I'm relatively certain I could do it but it doesn't hold my interest and I don't like working on old military actions.

I have a 223 and will likely add another target rifle in 223. As for the 6s I've always preferred the 25. I took my first centerfire deer coyote wolf and bear with a 25 so I'm kinda bias. Maybe it's just a sentimental thing. Never been a fan of the 270 although I've owned several. 7 and 8 mm I've never really had a lot of experience with. I prefer the middle ground of the 30 cals. 338 federal is a caliber I want though and when the house is paid off ill have a double in 375 and others. 450/400 for sure but right now the $15000 for one isn't an option
Just flipping though cartridges of the world there are so many forgotten 40 cals that I need one. Most likely just to play with. If i go with a rifle cartridge maybe take it bear hunting.
That 40 wsm might work. I've never been a real fan of the wsm clan but it would be a simple re barrel on a savage with maybe just a little feed ramp work.
The 40-2" had me thinking last night to. Any belted brass would work so it would basically be a skinny 458-2" with a shoulder
However I'm not an experienced wildcatter and would have no idea where to start with load data

That's a pity; p14 magnum builders seem to be a dying breed.

Maybe a good reason to develop my own skills

38/40 leaves me with only lever action or an expensive single shot doesn't it?

I'm thinking maybe the Jrc is the best bang for the money and fun factor until I can afford a double in 450/400
