I'm looking for affordable .308 Winchester and 7.62 NATO sources in Canada

Federal 150gr soft points. Find them for under $14 and you're doing good. Find them under $20 and that's average.

Cabela's and Wholesale Sports both had them the last time I was in there.

I get mine from my reloading press.

Using spent brass, I pay about 45 cents a round, or $9 for a box of 20 for match quality ammo. :D

But if you're stubborn, you can buy Remington UMC .308 from Bass Pro in Vaughn, whenever they have it in stock. I was buying it for $12 a box about a year ago, last time I checked, it was about $16 or so... It has probably risen since then.

Last week when I was at Bass Pro they had the Remington UMC's (FMJ, 150gr) for $15.99/box. That's pretty cheap for decent ammo. I bought a couple boxes for the heck of it.

Best bet is to reload. Like Tyler said, using match components (CCI bench rest primers, Lapua brass, Sierra bullets, IMR/Hodgdon power) will net me a round for about 50 cents. :)

In Toronto area, try Al Simmons gun shop (use that to google for his website, it is there, trust me) in Hamilton stocks both 7.62 and commercial 308.

If you collect your brass, you could pm me and we could work out a deal :D

I live close enough to TO (woodstock, ON) where we wont get rapped by shipping! And the money you get from me for your brass can be reinvested back into ammo ;)

Think of it like returning beer bottles back to the beer store :D

I've gotten UMC 150 grain .308. I've got the press and dies and everything. Just need to read up my reloading manuals then get bullets, primers, and powder. Then I'll probably have to get more brass as I've not shot much over 100 rounds yet.

Well I went searching for .308 WIN ammunition in Williams Lake today, cheapest I found was $21 a box (plus taxes) all the way up to $40 a box (plus taxes). Before anyone asks that was all 150 - 165 grain ammunition from various manufacturers.

I just bought some of the remington 'cheap' 150 gr FMJ at Lebaron for 18.95$
That the only place I found some out of the 3 places I went in Mtl last week

Has anyone checked out WallMart? I have purchased shot shells from them in the past that cost less than reloads.

Walmart has 18 a box Winchester power point, when it's in stock. Crappy tire has 19 a box powerpoint.

If I saw any 14/15 a box anything out here in Vancouver with reloadable brass I'd grab 8 or 10 boxes just to get some more brass.

Their 12 gauge 2 3/4" bird shot is dirt cheap ($24.99 for box of 100) last I checked, but their rifle ammo is above average on price.

is surplus 7.62 better to use than say .308 Win?

They are identical, except for the facts that 308 is the commercial name (and price) of the 7.62 NATO and the 7.62 primer is Berdan so a bit more difficult to reprime (you'll need specific tools)
