hey guys,

im new around here, recently got my gun license, and have always been fascinated with the over under break actions.

I have experience shooting, but never owning, buying, or maintaining any guns. what would be a good started O/U that would last me a while, while not breaking the bank either. im still a university student. ps. im only considering 12 gauge. my purpose for the rifle would mainly be clays. thanks guys!

Welcome to the lovely world of guns.......O/U shotguns are great 'cause their fairly easy to maintain and most quality guns will last you a lifetime. That being said you can get a new one for 500 or less or spend 5k easily on a nice gun AND UP.

You need to research what you like, what you're willing to spend and how long you think you're gonna keep it for. That being said the O/U game is not cheap. You may want to look at semis and get a quality gun for a lot less. (2k semis are super nice while a 2k O/U is mid-level as a new gun) Both will accomplish what you want, you just gotta decide on what you want more......

That being said, it is possible to get into O/U guns for a little less. An entry level o/u that you might want to take a look at is the Stoeger Condor in around the $700 mark. Also, for entry level....take a look at the Mossberg Silver reserve it's around $600. Those two will get you in the game but if you spend any time at the skeet club you'll be drooling over 5k plus guns all day. Shotgun envy may cause credit debt and frequently causes uncontrollable drooling HAHA.

There are deals to be had on used ones all the time so check out locals shops to your area. I'm from Ontario and as far as I concerned no one can beat Ellwood Epps for used shotguns (and most other guns) but that's just my opinion. They always have a huge inventory of used guns so take a look and maybe you'll score a good deal on a quality used gun (Brownings and Berettas are usually safe bets for O/U).

Best of luck and enjoy, I love my O/U it's a Caesar Guerini Summit Sporting.

I do not have an over under but I was doing the same research you were doing and learned one very important thing. If you are looking for a quality over under be prepared to spend 1500 upto 3000. If that is not in your budget range look at a nice semi. Over under's under 1000 will not take the punishment of high volume trap, skeet or sporting claws. I am broke so I sticking with my semi. Beretta and Browning both make quality over unders that will take the punishment of a lot of shooting. Be prepared to spend money.

if you can afford , buy used citori 28 or longer barrel , if not used semi , 1100 remington or berreta . say no to condor or silver reserve unless your not going to use it a lot .try lots to see what fits you .then buy .

sorry, that was a typo when i said rifle, i meant shotgun.

and thanks, kamlooky, that site seems to have a bunch of used o/u in my range.

Im not really too picky about minor cosmetic damage, but one thing i really want is the ejectors. and i think i would prefer a single trigger as opposed to a double trigger. thanks for all the good advice guys!

Should your budget permit then you may be better served to go for something like the one below.

However, it would be imperative to ensure that any shotgun you select must fit you, at least reasonably well, otherwise even a $10k brand name purchase can end in frustration.

The Remington SPR brand (read manufactured by Baikal, in Russia) is a robust gun and will serve very well in terms of the utility that you have in mind provided the shotgun fits you.

Since you mentioned your a student and on a budget, I'd check out the local ranges/gun shops for a used O/U. Plus you'll get more recommendations and make some contacts.

your link didnt seem to work. sent me to a page that said i didnt have access too. :p

So you want it to work well, to be reliable, and cheap. If you want to buy a new one, you can pick any two out of the three criterias.

Otherwise, look for a used Browning Citori or Beretta 686. If you are lucky, you might find a used Charles Daly, Miroku or KB, but those are few and far between.

Good show. I myself am considering an o/u mossberg, two choices from a local dealer one for about $350 another for abot $500. I had an opportunity to fire the $500 moss o/u at a local trap practice and it was great. The best for practicality and price, in my opinion, is a cheap used yet in good condition single shot 12 gauge for trap. You gotta make sure you only have one round in your firearm at a trap shoot anyway, usually. Plus, a used single shot can be less than a $100, they work fine and I beat a guy at practise that was using an o/u moss (and it was my first time). I kinda miss that single shot now.
