Im not sure on a starting gun... Im thinking of getting a 7mm 08 or should i get a .308 which would be a better gun to start with for Whitetail deer?
 
I assume you're looking for a rifle to hunt deer and you've never shot a centerfire before? :confused:

Anything from 243 to 308 should be good choices. 243, 6mm, 257 Bob, 25-06, 6.5x55, 7mm-08, 7x57, 30-30, 300 savage, 308. Which cartridge would best suit you depends on what rifle you want and what type of terrain you usually hunt.

a 7-08 or 308 in a compact bolt action or BLR lever will not be out of place anywhere
 
x2 on the .308. If you are like me then you are starting with a limited budget so .308 ammo can be had quite cheaply and practice is important with any new rifle. .308 is more than capable and has a wider range of bullet selection.
 
well, my brother has a 270win i can use that when i want he said also my da has a 30.06 which are really close and my uncles have a .308 which they would lend me no prob but i think i would go for a 7.08 would that be a good choice

What powdergun said.As much as I love 7mm's 308 ammo is way cheaper.Sometimes $12 a box you will never find that in 7-08.

How could you leave out the 30/06?

Then you'd miss all the great old Mausers that are chambered in 30/06.

I thought that picture was gatehouse for a second.

.308 is a very common round for first timers. Like somebody said a .308 in BLR is never out of place!

243 is not a bad choice either. The 308, 7oh8 can be used on other critters if your interests expand in the future. (moose, blackbear, pronghorn antelope, coyotes if you get into varminting ,elk~, and of course really big record book richardsons ground squirells- you can never be overgunned gopher hunting-)

A 243 is a common varminting round/rifle as well.

I started off with a 30-06 and it may have been a little too much at first, but it has been a proven meat gun.:D

May I suggest picking up a 22 when deciding on a big game rifle as well. Its good for practising techniques and cheap on ammo.
 
the .308 is one of the best all around guns it can be used to effectivly hunt 90% of north american game at almost every realistic range. its has managble recoil and is quite accurate. the ammo selection is quite broad and almost everywhere you go will have a box of .308 on the shelf. it can also be used for most if not all competitons.
 
.308, 30-06, .270 All are good and will serve you well for Canadian big game.
7mm 08 is a good one too. Not really popular with my crowd here in Alberta
but it is highly regarded in New Zealand from all I have heard from my Kiwi brethern.

Any of these calibers is a good choice.:dancingbanana:

I own a 30-06 I Love the .270 and I have killed most of my game with a .300 win mag.
Dude they all are good.
The only caliber I did not like for Western Deer was a .250 savage. And only because of the distances involved and the size of the Saskatchewan whitetail bucks I was hunting. Still in many cases it would be effective.

The internet is alot like Junior High School/High School, cliques,prejudices and ignorance abound. And pretty soon you realise that it does not matter what anybody else thinks, if you like your .270 or .308 or 30-06 it just does not matter what other minds think about your choice.

I like Todds post, I never thought I would read him recomending anything but a 700 :eek:. Whats the world coming to :confused: :D :runaway:

If you're hunting primarily deer, I'd look at something like a Remington Model 7
in .260 Remington or a Ruger 77 in .257 Roberts. Top it off with a Leupold VXII in 2-7 with the long range reticle and go at it. If not a bolt, try a 7600
in .243. All are easy to look at, have mild recoil, and will get the job done without much fuss.

I wouldn't worry about cartridges being a few bucks extra a box. Most guys likely consume more beer in a week ... paying more for it than they do for a box of premium cartridges.

I woud imagine that a new deer hunter would not give a rats ass if he was using a Mauser, a rifle that was based on the Mauser design, or a Push feed action.:rolleyes:

A .308 is a great choice, and I would reccomend ot above the 7-08 ony because you can get cheaper ammo to practice with.

Otherwise, the 7-08 is a perfect deer cartridge, and witht he right bullets, capable of taking elk and moose.

Regardless if the action is CRF or PF.
