I'm pissed !

Actually, it was freshly loaded and the first time out of the truck today.

But I will have the drink,:cheers:

Did you pop off a few primers prior to loading? I find most misfires with 209 muzzleloaders are operator error but every once in a while Murphy does get his hand in things. I've never had a missfire or hangfire since I started shooting guns with 209 primiers but I am religious about my loading routine. I did, however, have my share with #11 caps!

I had a similar issue with triple 7 powder sighting my gun in... in the cold, it would fire, and nearly a second later, it would go poof. I normally use pyrodex, but figured I'd give the triple7 a try as I had a box. Pooh. Loaded back up with pyrodex, and she went off without a hitch for 4 more rounds.

I leave mine out for at least 15 min to stabilze the barrel, then run 2 dry patches through for any condisation. So far no issues.

The area that we scouted and found some nice big bucks was a muzzle only zone.
Where were you hunting that is primitive only in Saskatchewan? I was under the impression (maybe falsely) that shotgun could be used in ML/Archery zones. I don't use ML or shotgun for deer so I'm not sure of the restrictions in Sask.

I use the same gun; just out of curiosity, what was the primer/powder/bullet? You said it was a fresh load but was it a fresh primer? I've heard of that happening if they get wet.

A fresh primer is when you buy a box of primers, and fire all but one of the box. if every one goes bang before it, the last one in the box must be fresh.
It adds a couple bucks to the cost of muzzleloading, but hey, its worth it when you have a big buck in front of you.

btw, im joking:nest:

As mentioned earlier it was a Savage bolt muzzle but I have no clue what my friend was using for powder or bullet.

I think it was CCI primers but I could be wrong.

And I'm not sure if he fired off some primers or not... as for fresh primer.. I'm not understanding the question. He took it out of the box that morning if that's what you mean.

And the question about the shotgun... you're right.. it is a shotgun zone as well. I just have a tendancy to forget since no one in my group uses a shotgun for anything but birds.

Hope everyone else had a good season... and best of luck next year!

Im a Savage ML II owner and love the gun. I have heard numerous complaints about IMR 4227 not igniting, were you using this powder?? I used SR 4759 with Win shotshell primers and never had a problem in 2 years hunting. Ive actually never even had a misfire and Ive hunted in snow and rain with it.

Cheers!!

Oh, that is what I meant. If I go out and don't fire, I'll put the primer in my pocket or wherever is handy until it's time to load again. I've never had a misfire with 4759, 5744 or 4198. I've left the last one loaded 6 weeks and it was dead on. Sorry to hear your friends story, that'll get me to be more careful with my primers from now on!

Same thing happened to my buddy hunting elk .......... sights on a 360 bull in a limited entry draw in the west kootenays ...........pulls the trigger nothing 5 milliseconds later lowers the gun says what the frig and boom off it goes.......... needles to say the gun is now in storage in a can.........also he needed a drink to double shot of tequila ......sorry to hear that

Hey dude, sorry to hear that. Was that our buddy in PA?

Maybe there's a reason he's a huge buck. He's a lucky SOB.... You need to get yourself a ML so you can do the backup next time.

Cheers,

DC

Not much of a choice. The area that we scouted and found some nice big bucks was a muzzle only zone.

It was still a good day, I bagged a nice white tail buck. It might score 140ish.

My buddy with the dud primer got a really nice mule buck at the end of the day. HUGE neck! It was a fighter for sure. All of the tips of the antlers were broken off from fighting. That would explain the big neck as well. If it weren't for the broken ends it might score 150.

Sorry no pics just yet.

We had fun, we got out hunting, and as we all know... you couldn't ask for much more out of life.

Being a hunter ,I should never say that I wouldn't use a muzzle loader. If it was the only legal way I would do it.

Muzzleloaders put the hunt back in hunting. If it was all about going out and shooting something they would have called it " Deer Killing Season ". Front stuffers may not always be as dependable but they sure are fun, after all it is the thrill of the hunt and the hunting experience that are the biggest reason to be out there.

A 209 shotgun primer should rarely if ever give you a hangifire... unless your channel is oily! That's when dry fires happen! Oil contaminates the powder too. I never use oil anywhere in or out of my muzzle loaders. ONLY WD40 that leaves no oily residue or any chance of causing a hangfire. It also helps against moisture since it is a water displacement product.

My dad would have continuous issues with his muzzleloader hangfiring. I kept at him to not use oil. He finally conceded and only uses WD40. No more hang fires!
