So this is just a silly little story, It's not about 1/2 inch groups at 300 yards, Nope I'm not at that level
This is for the 60 some year olds who have shot all their lives and still learning
. My Dad passed away in the early 90's, he was a crack shot with anything and excelled at long range shots. He was an amurature gunsmith and reloaded all his ammunition. When I was younger I had big arguments with him about sighting in guns, His theory with an old 280 Ross, Husqvarna 270 and with his favorite 7mm mag he acquired when the cartridge first came out was 5 inches high at 100 and about on at 300 that way he claimed he just had to go from top of back on big mule buck to belly out to 400 yards and he shot lots of deer in his career. I said oh whatever and over the years pretty much had all our different hunting rifles 1 1/2 in high at 100 yards and lined up customer guns too. I never did do much long range shooting, I hunted lots with muzzle loaders as well and believed in sneaking, crawling to get close as possible for that sure killing shot. Well till last year that is! At 68 years of age I have developed significant arthritis and just don't do sneaking or even walking like I used to. I had acquired a 308 Rem 700 on a trade with trick barrel, sniper stock, sweet trigger and 4-14 Falcon menace glass so loaded up some 165 gr Nosler and 50 gr. 4350 that gave me about 3/4 at 100 and did a bunch of mil ranging, vortex range finder and shooting and came up with the chart shown in pic, Hey Dad 5.1 inches high at 100 yards.
now this gun weighs about 15 or more lbs and remember my old joints don't like to get down on the ground anymore. so I rigged up the shooting rest set up as shown. Last fall shot a nice 5 point whitetail at 390 yards ranged, perfect heart- lung shot. This year we are drawn for Mule Deer Bucks, so went out shooting yesterday, targets shown in pics, pretty good conditions, a very very lite wind- gust so tried to allow for that, my drop calculations were out at 500 by .2 of a mil, so was a bit high, have it now 1 mil at 400 and two at 500 puts them on the mark. yea I know it's not tight groups but I feel it's good enough to knock off an old mulie. So Sorry Dad, wish you were here to show me how to shoot that 700, you were right! Hope you enjoy this story.
Old swivel bar stool with my rest mounted, and shooting pail has things like rope for truck winch, and other gear in it fits me perfect and easy to get out of truck and to set up.

The Remmy mulie sniper special!

400 yards, did this in two stages first target had three shots on it , then went picked it up waited for a little less wind and shot two more on another target then put those shots on first target. Pretty decent at 400 yards I think. Please remember I shot these like I was hunting, set up fast squeezed off quick .

500 yards, note-was high at 2.2 mils so going with 2 mils even.

The chart I will use.
