There is an interesting read on the net about the effects on velocity and accuracy when shortening a 223 barrel from 22 to 10 inchs in one inch increments. Definitely not the length of the original post ,but the article has some interesting data.

You can get max velocity from a .308 with a 22" bbl and see only a negligible loss of velocity at 20". I would like to see the Muzzle Velocity:Barrel Length data for .223.

A very interesting read about the effects of shortening a barrel (and lots of other topics). I agree that shrtening the factory barrel is not the best idea. Either try to learn to like it or wait and buy an aftermarket.

I agree. Not certain why he ended up buying one with a 30 inch bbl, but in any case my recommendation would be to rebarrel it to a 22 inch or buy another rifle and either keep or sell this one.

Agreed. I have shortened MANY accurate barrels in my time and NONE have shot worse than they did before and some shot better.

Edited to add: I would cut it. This only costs a few bucks at a good smith. Most of the people that recommend against it have never done it. Not all of course, and I am not dissing anyone here, just making an observation.
