Imagine if you could change the Type 81 and SKS, what would you do?

Imagine for a moment that you operate a factory producing Type 81 and SKS rifles

You've been given a mandate to improve the rifles without altering their base design or need to invest significantly in new machinery. Improvements could include things like reduced weight, manufacturing cost or increased accuracy

An example within the limits might be altering the rear sight of the SKS to be an aperture sight. Where as changing the calibre would not.

So what do you do?

allowing the sks to take type 81 mags, for starters.

Making the sks lighter and a few inches shorter would be nice as well.

Rail or spot to mount a flashlight, would be my last sks want. IMo, duct tape gets you only so far.

Can you give some examples of how you would make it lighter?

Would you for example remove the cleaning rod and bayonet assembly?

eliminate the grenade launcher and move the front sight forward. i have no issue with the rear sight aperture.

For the SKS a decent detachable magazine would be great. The SKS-D system works but is not great. It is kinda finicky. If you put a detachable magazine then you will want a pistol grip and then you might as well make the stock in line with bolt instead of the classic design. Folding stocks are nice but a fixed stock is better than a bad folder. Aperture sights are great but there is no feasible way of doing it. Unless you want to go the scorpio SKS 15 abortion route. Other wise, rife is fine.

For the type 81 how about just make them. But seriously, left hand charging handle. I would straighten out the magazine release but curved works just fine. Ditch the grenade launcher and move the front sight out more. Rear aperture is not going to work on a type 81 so make the rear more like the SKS

In regards to aperture sights I was more just thinking of a ghost ring instead of T shape for the Type 81 and the U-notch for the SKS no other changes just the shape itself

Having a forward mounted aperture sight does not work very well. It can certainly be used however you loose all the benefits of the aperture sight. Better off with a U or V notch sight on the SKS or Type 81

The safety location on the Type 81 is God awful. Move it reward so I don't have to break my grip to use it. That may be a stretch if you have to muck about with the FCG. Get rid of the 180 degree throw. Make it ambi please.

Need a way to mount optics. Side rail or whatever.

Axe the GL and thread the muzzle for a common device thread pitch.

Since we can't get grenades anyway, make the off setting on the gas valve an additional setting.

Make the mag latch wider on both sides by a bit to make gloved use a bit easier.

Make the trigger guard slightly enlarged at the front for use with thick gloves.

I suspect the moving of the safety would be beyond the scope of small changes as it would require an alteration to the receiver. A 90 degree throw might be possible.

Optics mounting is certainly a good point, it's an alteration that doesn't alter the making of a rifle

what use would an additional gas setting bring?

I would ditch the grenade launcher, make it compatible with AK mags, straighten up the angle on mag release (and maybe make the mag release lever a bit longer) and include a side mount base plate for optics.

I would also make the folder and the fixed stock to be compatible for swap without any modifications such as the VZ58.
Other than that, nothing really.

For the SKS ......make them all D models with better trigger components that are machined with much more attention to detail , adjustable gas and a reliable bolt hold open/release. Perhaps a better stock and ditch the excess metal like the bayonet assembly and mount and the gas system mounted sling loop..... threaded barrel for muzzle device options..... otherwise the sks is pretty hard to beat.

knock barell back to.16 inches.. and have a proper optic mount for the type 81 and polymer furniture on fixed stock versions
No need to do anything with the SKS.. it's to give to 3rd world countries in proxie wars.

Safety position. I hate the safety position on the SKS with a passion. I have no experience with the Type 81, but it looks bad as well. AK safeties with the extra shelf that you can actuate with your index finger are great. I like the Vz58 safety because you can swipe it up as you're getting your hand into a firing grip. So, I would take an AK or Vz style safety on those two rifles any day. Even a crossbolt safety would be better.
