Imagine if you could change the Type 81 and SKS, what would you do?

Pierce Armory's chassis gets most things right in reforming the SKS (pic: https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog...671_1229597680396128_510277823083028387_o.jpg) but even after are still many problems:
- Open on top receiver making mounting optics directly on top difficult
- Heavy steel Non-enclosed receiver
- No possibility of an Integrated Upper Receiver Rail
- No mounting possible for rail forend

Overall the SKS would require so many changes to be an effective modern rifle, it would be entirely new design. But i would be happy if it simply accepted AK mags, kicking myself for not having bought an SKS-KD when they were made.

The first two would require significant tooling set up and testing.

I can't see any benefits with the galil charging handle over what there is

flash hider sounds good

90 degree sounds good

I liked being able to just slide my hand back along the top of the receiver cover to hit the charging handle. Very natural movement. I thought it was a definite improvement over other AKs I got to use.

Well, for the type 81 I'd probably switch up the rear sight to something else. I do actually prefer how AKs/SKS are set up, and the disassembly method to get the top handguard off is just a pain if everything isn't perfectly clean as it is. So, AK-style
rear sight would improve it. Next, I'd simply slap a side rail plate on the Type 81. Sidemounts are still perfectly viable but I'd rather not bubba if I can help it (too late for me in this case).
I'd put on a bigger pistol grip. I got hands on the bigger side and the original grip is just uncomfortable. Bakelite grips are nice, but any modern AK-type grip would work too.
Maybe find a way to add a BHO release somewhere on the receiver so you can close the bolt without touching the handle?
If we're putting a side rail on the receiver, mirroring the safety to the right side would be nice too.

For the type 81, I'd change the safety for starters. Im partial to an ak style or even the sks safety. Make a conversion kit for an underfolder option, thicker barrel and Ak style rear sight. Ak part compatibility would open up the third market which would really help the T81 shine because it's severely lacking. Change the pistol grip so it has the same dimensions as an ak would be good too.

Like I said in the m10x vs t81 thread..... after shooting the type81 LMG, I think I would get them to scale it up a wee bit and offer it in 7.62 x54R. I recall an AK dragunov in that caliber and would be sweet to get the T81 stretched a bit to fit the russian sniper round.

It would sell good just for the visual novelty. But unless they improved its accuracy somehow, it would ultimately still be a 3-4moa gun. 3-4moa doesnt really compliment the ballistics of 54r. This is why i think the Tabuk Sniper rifle and numerous AK clone builds is a more worthy endeavor for the Type 81SAs.

I don’t own em, but from past experience I’d lengthen the sks stock at least 4 inches, other than that it’s a pretty good platform.
