Imperial

I still have some Imperial slugs and buck shot from the 70's. I believe they stopped production in the early 80's. Good shells. Cheers

Not the oldest that I have seen. The oldest are C.I.L. The pics look OK. I would check them all for wierd looking stains. If you keep them cool and dry, it will be safe for your great grand children to shoot them safely.

Agree on the age. They were in those boxes in 79 for sure since I had a friend charged for having the exact box in his underware in a duck blind that fall. They were not legal down here but people would use them for pass shooting geese.80-100 yard shots no problem.

That ammo was made by IVI or Industries Valcartier Inc., Valcartier, Quebec, Canada.

I think they took over the old CIL Canadian Industries Ltd. my guess early 70s.

3mac1 says at least 1979. Try google on IVI

Mid-1980s for sure. I've still got a couple boxes of half-brass #4 shot kicking around that I didn't have the heart to use. Imperial shotshells were great. I wish I had bought cases back when we still could.

Here we go. Seems they purchased CIL in 1973 but it was not until they took over the CIL ammunitions plant in Quebec in early 1977 did they switch to produce the complete Imperial Lineup. It was sold in 1980 to the snc group which stopped producing civilian ammo beginning in the 83/84 years as they retooled the plant for military ammo production 5.56mm in particular.
Here is a picture introducing their new line of Imperial ammo for the year 1977. You can see the plastic hulls there.Seems they were paper prior to that year and a much lighter purple color probally CIL stuff
Thus the oldest these can be is 1977 and up to probally 84 or 85. All I know is no powder smells as sweet as an imperial load. Feel free to correct me if this data is not right

i still have a bunch of paper hulled shot # 5 6 and 7 size and slugs the paper is covered in wax kind of neat . i used this stuff for ducks and geeses till we had to go to steel . scine then i have used some for bunnys and groues .what you going to do with your buck shot i am intrested in it if it is for sale DUTCH

SSG (.31") is closer in size to 0 (.32") buck, not 00 (.33"). Note the box labels in the picture.

Thanks for the size. I've wondered how SSG compared to U.S. buckshot sizes. I recently acquired 40 or 50 rounds of old Dominion paper shells in 16 gauge all marked SSG. A friend cleaned out a gun closet in an old family farmhouse and I was the only guy he knew that ran a 16 gauge. I think the old guys who owned the house used this stuff to shoot deer, probably day or night.

It appears that there is some inconsistency in conversion tables between US and English shot sizes.

I would sure like to know which one is right! I am inclined to think that if Imperial listed their SSG shells as 0 buck, that is probably correct for their shells, at least. The only way to know would be to pop open a shell and measure a pellet.

I'll have to consult my copy of Greener's The Gun and its Development when I have a chance and see what it says.

I would not put a lot of weight in your 1st two links. The third link seems to match the chart I posted which has matched any buckshot I have purchased in canada or from the US and reloaded > So far that would be. F, 4, 1,2, 0, and 00.
I have some imperial ssg's here somewhere, once I get back to the bench this fall I will cut one open for you. take care
