Alberta F&W is running an online hunter harvest survey, at the conclusion there is an option to vote for or against crossbow use during 'traditional' archery only seasons (as if hi-tech compunds are traditional).

Anyway, I think it important that all Alberta hunters should participate in this vote.

I did.

Is there a online poll link or how do get to cast my vote.

I have hunted the last 2 years here, took a nice whitetail this fall (first in 7 years) and would like to get my vote in there.

I was sent an email from F&W, that's how I stumbled onto it. I think you can find it through Alberta RELM...

FWIW, I voted for the use of crossbows during 'traditional' archery only seasons, because I believe we should support anything that promotes or expands hunting opportunities. There's lots of older guys, or maybe guys with a bad shoulder that cannot use a conventional bow, and might not be interested in hunting with firearms.

This survey is running until Jan 31st, I believe.

If you are signed up for Albertarelm, you'll get the survey emailed to the email address attached to your account. If not, you won't get the survey as far as I know.

Much to the shagrin of the ABA, I voted the same as Demonical.

^ ABA: Alberta Bow Hunters Assoc.? Is there such a thing?

Hunters need to see the big picture and do whatever we can to promote and expand hunting opportunities.

While we're at it, I want HANDGUN HUNTING.

Absolutely! Bug your MLA, and point out to them that the handgun hunting regulations are provincial, not federal, because I can almost guarantee he will blame the feds and say his hands are tied.

I voted no. Here's why. They have no plan. Mule Deer, Moose, and perhaps Elk will go on the Draw. Want to hunt Antelope with a bow? Forget it they only allow a fraction of the tags for archery but now the priority will double. Priority 10 anyone???????

Don't try to pass this off as more opportunity it is going to be a freakin money grab by SRD by pushing a new (now two) groups into the draw. I have no problem with a special crossbow season prior to rifle. Not during regular archery. I sorry but I will be a missouran until they prove that this won't limmit my opportunity as a hunter. I enjoy two seasons right now. Would hate to lose the archery option to draw.

explain how an MLA could change this or would even give a hoot.

You guys are dreaming. LOL

A handgun hunt will NEVER fly in this country as long as we are under the thumb of the Pistolaphobic Federal government.

Still it is nice to dream

frankly a bow is a bow when it comes down to it. Older people or the slightly dissabled or perhaps just people of a slighter build being able to enjoy hunting is all I care about

elderly and disabled folks already can quite easily obtain a permit to use a crossbow in an archery season. i have seen first hand how easy it is from guys with 0 ailments obtaining said permits by lying.

I voted NO. Just going to get the november road warriors out there pounding gravel earlier. Thats all it could achieve. Much like making electronic calls legal has turned every weekend deer "hunter" into a predator caller w:h:

Yup, and I bet Bluffton Bill is a member. ;)

Nobody has said that. It has been suggested that MAYBE some animals MIGHT go to draw in SOME wmus.

I won't get into it here.

Nope haven't been a member for many years. I ony have one bow. Pile of guns. I only bowhunt know when I want to avoid the crowd, but now it is going to follow me out there too.

If you want to hurl innuendo to make your point then I'll bet you are either an outdoor writer trying to make brownie points or maybe a sporting goods store owner looking to cache in on the gear rush;)

If you double or tripled the number of archers in one of the last few October, general moose archery season you don't think that MAYBE might have to be MUST? What about a dramatic increase in Mule Deer Buck harvest. It is 100% guaranteed to happen.

If we got to do this then the only way I could support it would be to do it like some US States. You have a choice. You can pull an archery permit for the month of Sept (that you could use your X-bow in), or a muzzleloader permit for October, and a Rifle for November. Here is the catch. You can only hunt during that season with that tag. No hanging the bow up and filling your muley tag with a smokepole or thunderstick.

That would be fair. For species that need to be trimmed down you could allow omni-weapon tags (ie mule doe, wt deer, cow elk,).

Makes me chuckle how the hardcore bow hunters are suddenly whining. I guess though, after having carte blanche for more than a decade fairness would suddenly seem like being ostracized.

"Assuming" xbow hunting is allowed with COMPOUND bow. (we'll just say archery season, 'cause it sure as hell ain't primitive now)

1. Everyone's not going to rush out and buy a xbow. More likely the resale value of a compound will just go from little to nothing.

2. The # of deer wounded will likely Drop. I know a few "hardcore" bow hunters. They're also hardcore trophy hunters, and I don't think much of their ethics; less of their "skills". I guarantee you they are already shopping for xbows while they're whining.

3. Wether we like it or not, the population of AB is higher and higher every year. All those young guys that moved here want to hunt, too. Maybe this is one way to spread the demand for tags out more?

I suspect you'll also see a bp season province wide next fall. Perhaps they Will go with, "pick your season" tags. Maybe that will be the answer.
At least f&g is trying. To do nothing would soon mean priority 30 for everything.
And if giving every Albertan an equal, fair chance to hunt means bowhunters only get a trophy antelope tag every 4yrs instead of the current every second year, well suck it up, buttercup, nobody cares.

Crossbows are NOT held by muscular power and unlike componds or tradional bows are NOT OR DO NOT have to be drawn in the presence of game. You can #### a crossbow at first light and it can remain that way all day. You can drive a motorized vehicle with a cocked ready to go crossbow. For these advantages they have over cmpnds and trad archery equipment they imho do not belong in the archery season!!!! Go ABA!!!!!

I definitely see the concern, but the novelty will wear off real quick when new crossbow owners learn that its not as easy as it looks on TV.

Crap....I got sucked into posting again.

Cheers!
