Importing 1890's mfg Type 26 9mm japanese revolver

even if it was in .32 acp and pre 1898 its antique

Yup. .32ACP isn't on "the list". Factory ammo could be a bit snappy for the old ones though. Still, if the cases fit, or could be readily adapted, it would be a great start for loading.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but how could you know it is a first year production? I searched high and low on the internet and still can't find serial number/production date info for type 26 revolver.

C'mon guys, I comb through 500 paged of Japanese document last night and all I can find is an order of 2,200 type 26 placed by the imperial army on Sep,2 1897.

A little help here for the serial number before cutoff date?

Pre 1898 is one of the factors, not the only one. If it was made after, or can still fire/chamber current "modern" ammunition it still requires RPAL and ATT for importation.

Its the same reason you cannot import an 1873 Colt single action in .45LC (without proper registration, ATT, RPAL, etc...)

You are wrong on the matter of "modern" ammunition as well. When C68 was being discussed, one of the first drafts contained information concerning cartridge restrictions - based on whether or not they were "readily available". This had been changed years ago to a list of no-go cartridges.
This old misinformation still occasionally crops up though.
