Importing a scope walk through for paperwork process

Lol. I care because I have a friend that got stopped by US customs Export Control and was asked if he had purchased anything in the US that he was taking back home. He fessed up to buying hunting ammo as he had no idea that there was a thing called ITAR and ammo was a restricted export item.

He was given a stern warning and was told that a charge would have prevented US entry and he worked in the US and crossed weekly. I worked in the US for my last 8 years before retirement and made sure I didn’t have any ITAR items with me on my way home. I didn’t want a lifetime US entry prohibition that would have affected my employment..!!

So ya, I care, lol

Lol, maybe you don’t understand what I’m concerned about. I’ll explain;

I’m only concerned that I’m compliant with their export rules when coming home. I don’t work in the US anymore but visit friends there often and have PO Box in the US and use it often. Don’t really care what others do but will tell friends about the export rules as many are not aware of them. I really don’t want a US lifetime ban because of getting caught with a box of cheaper ammo… YMMV

they do not have to ban you to enter for life: you can be declined for no reason to enter the usa ... there will be a record on your name and you will be asked everytime you re entering the usa. a lifetime ban will be with a judge ... we have a friend that was caught with powder, hunting scopes and hunting ammos from haines in alaska: he had to voluntarly surrender the items that were seized and was not banned but the officers told him to not to it again and they even gave him a receipt.

we enjoyed the delay last time we can enter the usa so 3 years ago in skagway. the interview lasted 25 min with him and he was not with us in the truck ...

Cost, Exchange, gst + handling + shipping etc ...

Better deals in Canada - unless you need a rare unicorn from Narnia, makes no sense 🤔 and will cost way more.

Agreed. It’s the agents discretion what he’ll do. It was the same with my friend returning to Ft Francis when the Export Control stopped him. They took away his ammo, gave him a receipt and a warning the next time would be very serious. The agent can issue a 5 year entry ban on his discretion so getting the wrong guy could go sideways.
 
The deals on optics planet are too good to not look into. Some of their opmod stuff has unreal pricing for rebranded scopes

My first choice is to work with someone local and preferably independent. But the Euro scopes are almost prohibitively expensive here so I may (have to) pick something up when I am over there in June for my South African hunt in August/September.
 
I am shopping for a scope these days. I have couple models in my mind and turns out the best deals are in USA, but all of it ITAR regulated.
Even if I want to buy a second hand from USA, just spoke to the guy he is trying to figure it out how to send it to me...
Interesting time we live in.

First, it's no longer ITAR Regulated. Civilian items are now CCL(Commerce control list) with the department of commerce. If your item is under $500 value, then the gentleman in the US can ship it to you under a 740.3 LVS exception

I just remembered, optics do not count for LVS exception. In this case he would have to file for an export permit from BIS, which is free, but may take up to a month to issue.

Alright!

I'm looking for the BIS export permit, any idea which one that would be? Sent an email off to them as well about it.

Edit: I got a hold of an export officer, the new system for Export is called "SNAP-R" which is part of BIS. An exportation starts at this website https://snapr.bis.doc.gov/snapr/ for which I am reading all the FAQ's:

It needs to be applied for from a US based business in advance, it takes a while, application for export permit free though apparently. I have friends with businesses in the US, and a Canadian bud living abroad there. I might see if they are interested in being involved.

Would be sweet if a guy could order to a border shipping outlet and get paperwork for export done for it, or similar.
