Importing Ammo across the Can/US Border

Hardly any trouble at all if a US business licenced to export arms and ammunition is involved.
You get an International Import Certificate from Cdn. Departmnt of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, send it to your US exporter, who will apply to the US Department of State for an export permit for the shipment. Could take 6 weeks or so.
If you obtain a US hunting licence, you will be able to be in legal possession of the ammunition on the US side of the line, and bring it back yourself; otherwise it would have to be shipped.
Can you just go to the store in the US, buy it, and bring it back? You would be in violation of a number of US laws.

Natural resources canada website says NOTHING about these import forms you're all talking about! It said legally you can import up to 5000rds and all you have to do is declare it. If you bring back more than that, then there's paperwork.

So when you guys say you need an import permit, it's only for over 5000rds. You should specify that so noobs like me don't get confused.

IMPORT into Canada is not the same as EXPORT from the United States.
Two sets of laws, and the US ones are the really serious ones.
ATF website might not help; it is US Department of State that issues the licences.
The Canadian International Import Certificate (IIC), obtained from DFAIT is not necessary to IMPORT personal ammunition into Canada, BUT it is necessary for the licenced US exporter to get the US export licence needed for your export.
Just to add, under the 5,000 round limit only means you don't need a SECOND import permit (and licence) from NRCAN (Natural Resources Canada). And for the NRCAN permit, the ammo MUST be on their Approved list.
Getting ammo onto that list is a whole different subject, and the reason why all that cheap ammo isn't available in Canada in the first place.

Alright so I should either NOT do it. or do what I've heard others do and just buy the ammo, declare it at the canadian border and drive home..
So the 5 or 6 people ive talked to that have told me they did it that way just got lucky.

If you're hell bent on buying box ammo, do it by the book. It's not as complicated as it may seem. You need to do some legwork up front, but it may be worth it. I did it successfully when I went to buy gobs of .22 rimfire. For centerfire stuff I wouldn't waste the time and effort. You'd be better served saving the money and putting it toward reloading. Not sure what your particular circumstance is, but reloading will cure any desire you have to attempt ammo smuggling across the border.

If you get caught exporting ammo from the usa and they do spot checks on the us side
you will LOSE it for sure and..... they can take your car/truck they can fine you,arrest you,deport you and ban you from entering the usa which also means you cant fly thru thier airspace and or all of the above or maybe your lucky and wont get caught.....
DO NOT try it without export permits
Even if none of the "scary" things mentioned above happen if you get caught, two things WILL happen.
1) your ammo and all purchases will be confiscated
2) you will be banned for life from entering the US.
Actually you may only be banned for 5 years...
But you may loose your car..
You may also be banned from crossing US airspace.. and you may be on the hot list forever which will mean secondary inspections every time you cross in and out of the US...
