Dave's Sports only can export ammo that the U.S. State Department will allow to be exported. So for example anything in the surplus category is a no. And, you also run the risk of what the U.S. permits for export NRCAN doesn't approve for import.
If you picked something on the approved list like .22LR or 9mm commercial, even if you maxed out your 5000ct round count, taking into consideration labor (travel time), fuel, export license, line fee, and the 3%, you'll pay more for the ammo than buying it right here, which begs the question: "why?"
This thread of bringing ammo back from the U.S. to Canada now seems to pop up about once every 72 hours and it seems what the OP's are hoping for is someone will come up with some sort of secret revelation that "those guys" know some sort of trick or process on how "they" can get ammo back into Canada cheaply and legally, and the argument always seems to go in the same direction: downhill.
Bottom line:
1. Unless you are a dealer here in Canada and have the proper export documentation from the U.S., you cannot legally import ammunition from the U.S. into Canada as an individual. If people are doing it, they are breaking the law. If they get caught, the consequences are broad scoped.
2. If you get a business to import your ammo, the costs to do so exceed the cost of buying the ammo right here in Canada even if you max out on your purchase.
3. Buying ammo in the U.S. does not support Canadian firearms dealers and further supports the degradation of dealers doing business in Canada which in the long run hurts gun owners. By sending your money south you're un-intentionally sending a message north that Canadian gun owners don't support Canadian firearms dealers.
With the Canadian dollar floating around parity and with added competition here in Canada coupled with the possible consequences of doing it, it doesn't pay to buy your ammo in the U.S. and bring it back.
