Importing ammo from the US.

No, it's illegal as US law doesn't allow export of ammo unless you have export permit.

This question has been discussed way too many times; don't do it or you may face time, fine and not allowed in the US ever in your lifetime.

Canadian law says you can bring in up to 5,000 rounds for your own use without any fuss. However, unless you're Stateside to hunt or shoot a match with a valid U.S. Form 6, etc., you can't legally be in possession of firearms or ammo as a non-immigrant alien.
U.S. Homeland Security has been known to do 'spot checks' of vehicles leaving their country. Get caught, you will be arrested. Whoever sold it to you likely would be too.
"...don't get stopped by US officials you are OK..." You'd be in violation of U.S. law if you're stopped or not. So would anyone who sells it to you. Counselling criminal activity isn't allowed here.

It's not just frowned upon, it's full on illegal.
Having said that, it is easy to get the proper forms. I've gone to the excol web site and signed up, asked for an import permit and received it within five days. You then have to mail that permit along with a signed purchase order, to the exporter in the States. They will then use that paperwork to apply for an export permit. If the exporter is submitting the permits online then it's possible for them to get an export permit in about a week. At that point they can ship it to you. I'm not sure about you picking it up even if you have the export and import permits. They may have to ship it to the border and then you go to pick it up. Or, and this is just a guess - if you have both the export and import paperwork + a valid US hunting license (needed to be in possession ammo in the States) then you can bring it back across the border. I'm going to find out about that last part.

The US seller will have to be a registered exporter, or go through a registered exporter. (I am pretty sure, I believe CanAm answered this question not too long ago)

This is a 'bunk' law, especially when you see 2.50 a box skeet 12 gauge and federal fusion for 9.00 a box (308/30-06) at 'wally world' in Bellingham, but we 'must be' terrorists due to the fact we live in Canada

You can always get a Glock G21 and an Advantage Arms .22lr conversion kit. Best of both worlds. I got a G20C (10mm) and the AA kit, it's excellent.
