Importing ammo?

I was wondering if a dual US/Canadian citizen can bring across ammo without the import license. I heard somewhere that Americans don't have to get the license. Does it make a difference if the person lives in Canada?
 
The "Holier Than Thou" ignorance in this place makes me sick some (or sometimes most) of the time... Did any of you read the OP's post...!?!?!

There most certainly IS an ITAR exemption for US Persons (residents and citizens) that allows for the export of up to 1,000 rounds of ammunition for personal use without a DoS export permit.

ITAR 123.17E to be exact...

Here's a CBP document that instructs CBP officials on how to list the exemption under 123.17E on declaration forms. The text below is quoted from the document's preamble, the link that follows is to the document itself.

"Use a DDTC (Directorate of Defense Trade Controls) ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Reduction) Exemption Code when required in a commodity filing.

These specific citations (exemption number/codes) from the Code of Federal Register (see CFR 120-130) exempt a shipment from the requirement for a license or other written authorization from the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls."

So that we're clear... non-US persons (Canadians or, or, or...) CAN NOT export ammo from the US without permits... however US persons CAN, up to 1,000 rounds for personal use...
 
My call to the ATF about two minutes ago confirmed that even US citizens need proper export documents to legally bring ammo out of the US and back in. A stop at the US border patrol confirmed what the ATF said.

Which is it, the person I have done business with the ATF for five years' word, USCBP? They are the two alphebet agencies that are gonna get you in a world of hurt regarding exporting without permits. You will deal with both of them to do it, from my research, both are saying no. I have heard that from numerous individuals at each agency.

I am tired of these threads every two days. Someone is always using the dual citizenship card to do it, regardless, you need a friggin' permit, whether you are dual or not.

US citizens who are also US residents routinely enter Canada for participation in competitions with their personal firearms and ammunition.
Can a US citizen who is NOT resident in the US, who is a resident of Canada, go cross border shopping for ammuntion, and bring it back into Canada?
I believe that is the question that the OP is asking.

Hey, peckerwood... follow the link that I posted, to CBP's website, and then, if you're able to read, read the document... I simply blocked and copied the text on the form...

So, you can read after all... hmmm, who would have guessed. Too bad your grammar and vocabulary suck... allot, as in to apportion is not a lot, as in many or much.

My practical experience comes from, with full disclosure along the way, having brought ammunition back into Canada from the states as recently as last December. Not hidden in the quarter panels of my car, or in a false bottom in my suitcase... but declared, without permits.
 
I won't waste my time replying to KJ...

But to the OP...if your livelihood has anything to do with traveling to the US...working with ITAR (directly or indirectly) or holding a Government of Canada Security Clearance...it's not worth the risk.

The only thing black and white about ITAR regulations are the penalties if the Dep of State decides you are guilty. It's then up to you to prove otherwise ($). Also...don't expect DOS and ATF to be in sync...

Personally...I wouldn't risk it if they were giving the ammo away for free.
