I have a relative in the US who owns a small gun-shop and has a FFL, does anybody know the procedures to have him legally sell and ship a firearm to me? Being a relative he is willing to work with me obviously but is this something that is better off facilitated through a Canadian importer? If so, those of you with experience, what costs can I anticipate?

I have used Prophet River before and would do so again. I am not an expert in the matter but it is my understanding your relative has to apply for an export licence. He will have to pay a yearly fee for this licence. When you want a gun you can contact DFAIT and get an import certificate. Once you have the certificate you send it to the relative who applies to either Department of State or Department of Commerce (rifles for one shotguns for another) for an export permit. When the permit is in place your relative can ship the gun North. I also believe (but am not sure) that a US Citizen can get a one time export permit. There are lots of threads on this topic someone will post more complete information I am sure. Good luck
Very true and he is checking on his side, I am just inquiring on my side also as it might be more cost effective to just use a Canadian broker for the few transactions we would do.
