Hi all,

Given the legal status of modern flintlocks is it possible to purchase one online from the US and have it shipped to Canada without expensive legal brokering?

Thanks

Muzzleloading firearms - Not classified as a firearm in the US. Hence you can acquire without a back ground check and export without a permit.

"...Not classified as a firearm in the US..." And as an antique here. Send the money. Looked into it a couple years back. The difference is 100% or more on a Lyman flinter. $700 plus here. $350ish US. No importing or exporting issues. There is a learning curve with BP though. The loading manuals, even for a flinter, are by volume, not weight like smokeless.

You need to check your figures a liitle better. A Lyman GPR flintlock will set you back about $673.00 with shipping from Track of the Wolf, and they have some of the better prices around. Also, that shipped price does not include any taxes you are likely to get dinged with on this side of the border. That price is a long ways from $350.00.

Thanks guys,
I was just looking into an entry level rifle like a Lyman Deer Stalker or GPR etc. I had heard that they could be had for quite a bit less from major US retailers than we get them here. Some web browsing reveals that many US online retailers won't ship to Canada but one could just ask if they will ship a Flinter. I know TOTW ships. Thanks.

I ve purchased several percussion muzzleloaders from the States using Prophet Rivers import service and everything went without a hitch.Sometimes it takes a couple of months for it to arrive so if you want it for this seasons hunting you have to plan ahead.

Exporters want $100 + shipping. As I understand it, you can drive down to the states to buy a percussion muzzleloader and come back to the Canada border.

Only have to show the PAL. That ovoids the paper work, and export fees when you bring it to Canada yourself. No duty fee for items made in USA.

Do the US shipping companies allow shipments to PO boxes within US ? Then I wouldn't need an exporter for percussion muzzleloaders.

Percussion cap muzzle loading firearms are in the same non-firearm catagory and are flintlocks in the US.

Yes that's true. They do require a PAL for Canada. When shipped to a Canadian address there is paperwork involved. I think Canada Customs would need an import permit ? and PAL info.

Funny that US stores will not sell percussion muzzleloaders to Canada, but flintlocks are no problem.

Buying a Percussion cap muzzleloader in person from the US & bringing it back yourself, a PAL is all that is required to pass the Canada border.

North star: depends on how you get them, if you get a kit gun from the states and build it there is no questions asked it just gets shipped. before you just had to register it after not sure what you do now.

All muzzle loaders are totally free of any border restrictions, either export on the USA side or import on the Canadian side. You will need a PAL and Canada Customs will likely require HST. Why anyone would go through an import service is beyond me. For any of us who are close to the border it is a short trip to buy and bring back. All muzzle loading equipment is also included.... You can even import up to 8kgs of black powder in one pound containers for each trip across. Make no mistake, BP firearms and BP are much cheaper in the USA. Dave

What the laws are and what the US Homeland security thinks the laws are can be quite diferent. They confiscated my 50 cal Rem 700 Black powder barrel last spring from the mail because in their words "it could be converted to shoot modern ammo".

Numrich has a ton of flint lock Invest Arm Hawken drop in barrels for $98.00 new, and refuse to ship one here.

You can definitely ship a flintlock from the States no problem! Just had a buddy who bought a flinter from gunbroker dot com and had it shipped to him in Ontario. From start to finish, it took 13 days (including weekends) to get to him. All he paid when he got it was about $45 in taxes (other than what it cost him to buy it). As for flinter pistols, you need an rpal. But long gun flintlocks (rifles and smoothbores) seem to have no issues coming across the border (though customs held my buddies for four days of processing, which is fairly normal).

No PAL required for flintlock rifle; only for caplock.
