Importing handgun from USA?

It's not worth the fuss nor expense. There's very little Stateside that can't be found here. Read the first 'sticky' on the Legalese forum.

Dont be fooled by the seemingly lower US prices. By the time you get it here(which can be a lengthy process with paperwork) you most likely can get it for about the same as a good retailer here. If its something thats classified as prohibited then forget it...

How hard is it to import a handgun from an FFL dealer in the States? Anyone know the process?
It can be time consuming but it can't be too hard - Questar does it all the time.

Don't be put off by those saying it isn't worth the fuss nor expense. If that were true, Questar wouldn't be doing it all the time. They charge a nominal fee and people continue to use their service.

Do your homework and research prices. The US dollar is reasonable right now.

I would like to purchase a Beretta PX4 Storm .45 Special Duty. I have seen this advertised for $995 US. A local dealer was saying they will be double that here? Doesn't make sense, but when I compare most handgun prices in the States and then look at the price in Canada it seems that you can save big $$$ if yourself without a broker. For instance a S&W M&P is usually listed at $499 in the US. A local dealer has a few for $800! There is only about 13% diff. in the dollar now.
Anyway, I have been told that this .45 will most likely not be available in Canada. So importing from the US may be the only option.

If you're close enough to the border to drive then it can be worthwhile...
Depending on what you wanna buy you can save significant $$
'Friend o' mine wanted a Para 16.40.
Noone in Canada could get him one.... 'Had it in hand within a week by buying in the US. 'Couple hundred le$$ too even with exchange and gas to the border.
'Same deal on a beretta 9mm
Strange eh.... the para is made in a factory and hour away from where we live, but he had to go to NY to get one!

When I move back to Ontario, I will be buying from a just over the boarder gun shop. The U.S. based shop sells to Canadians all the time, so they have the process down to a science.

I haven't done this in recent years, so I am not familiar with the process.

As I understand from talking to the Buffalo Gun Center (Buffalo New York), purchase gun and show licence. Take info home and contact CFC to start transfer process. Gun Center takes care of the U.S. based paper work. Gun center employee takes gun to boarder for a fee. When you have your ATT and the gun is registered, you take it home from the boarder.

This may be over simplified and I may have forgotten some info, but this is how I understand the scenario.

We have imported both ways. It has cost as little as $175.00 and as much as $275.00 per firearm. Be prepared to wait about 2 to months to receive your firearm.

"...only about 13% diff. in the dollar..." The exchange rate is only a small part of the price difference. Add duty(no Free Trade for anything firearm related), both taxes, shipping, brokers fees, etc. Generally, you can add 100% to the price you see Stateside.
"...most likely not be available in Canada..." Right. The Beretta PX4 Storm .45 Special Duty is prohibited due to its barrel 102mm length. Neither you nor Questar can import prohibited firearms.

Wrong. No duty on american made guns. Buy a S&W or Ruger, no duty. Buy a Beretta made in italy then yes... duty @ 3%. Or if you're lucky the CBSA guy forgets to add it in :D

both taxes,

Yeah... there's no beating teh tax man:(

Well like I said... If you can drive an hour or two it's more than worthwhile. If you need to have someone act on you're behalf and'or pay postage yes you will have to pay... Nothing is free...

Sure prohib stuff is unavailable, but when you call all over Canada looking for a plain old Savage 10FP or a Para 16.40 and every dealer says' they don't have one, but will be glad to order you one with no idea how long it'll actually take to get one... That sucks.
Our American store didn't have the 10FP in stock either, but was able to get one in 3 days.
'Just the sad plight on Canadian shooters... we rep. such a small market that we're usually the bottom of the retail food chain:(

I just imported "Firearms Parts" (Customs declaration) from Brownells and there is no duty. GST, PST from your province and a $5.00 mystery handling fee (Customs inspection or Canada Post)only. I know there are additional fees for an actual firearm but there's no duty, at least on US made guns.

Thanks for the sarcasm. The SD has a barrel length of 115mm.

There is an export FFL dealer in Montana that does the whole thing for $125 and $25 for each additional gun. They meet you at the border.

You have to give the FFL you buy from th export dealers info and an admission number (easy to get). You get your CFC stuff together while waiting for th export papers, then you pick it up at the border and pay GST, etc.

Great if you live next to Montana.

If you're talking about Leroy's Big Valley Gun works, the time they exported a lower for me I paid DHL $183 for shipping (an unpleasant surprise on top of the other charges) and had to clear the thing in person at customs and get it from the DHL warehouse, in person. No shipment to my door like Questar.

I got my Kimber Desert Warrior stateside before they were available here.
It was and still is cheaper than what you can get it for here.

The CX4Storm is available in Canada, in stock in some places for between ~$950 CAD (restricted) to $1250 CAD (unrestricted). If you want, I can dig up who has them in stock...
