Question for everyone before i call the CFP i was just wondering what the legalities were regarding importing a pistol that has been prohibited by barrel length without said prohibited device eg the barrel. Ive seen makarovs, ppks and such with 4" barrels that were only restricted and ontop of that interammo bringing in restricted maks a few years back. Im just wondering if these pistols that are solely prohibited by barrel length would it be possible to get a gunsmith in the US to remove said prohibited device and send me the rest of the gun without a Barrel then getting a local manufacturer to make me a custom barrel that is the legal length
Ty for reading

If the FRT entry has only a 12-6 length barrel, the thing isn't going to be classified as restricted until a plus 105mm barrel is installed.

Incidentally, exportation has to be done by a licenced exporter.

Makarov's and Luger p.08s cannot be imported as frame only. Frame only are considered prohibited. (I tried)

You are much better off getting that same US gunsmith to make the restricted length barrel for you - cheaper, faster and fewer shenanigans compared to some canadian gunsmiths that do this work. You also won't have to destroy the original barrel this way. Selling it may not be exactly lucrative but still better than nothing.

If the FRT entry has __only a 12-6 length barrel__, the thing isn't going to be classified as restricted until a plus 105mm barrel is installed.

(emphasis in the quote is mine)

From my experience trying to get a Makarov - that's not exactly correct. The FRT for the makarovs has both R and P entries. Frame only is still P until that R length barrel is on. Funnily they will then let you strip the barrel and keep the frame only as R. The mental gymnastics required made my head hurt...

A big advantage of having the work done before importation is that the thing comes in as R, and was never in Canada as P.
