Hi Guys.

I am planning a trip south this winter and thought I could save a few hundred bucks by bringing a scope home with me when I come back.

I can see that there is a sticky on this but it was posted in 2007. Does the info in that post still stand? Still need reams of paperwork to bring the optics across the boarder?

Let me know what you know.

Thanks.

It's not so much bringing a scope into Canada but legally getting it out of the US. The US border patrol like to do out bound stops and things like scopes fall under the evil category.

I found I had to go to amazon.ca found American stores that would ship to Canada, even got free shipping. Had to press the secondary(options) blue button. Could be cheaper than the shown price, sometimes less than half of the shown price

Import into Canada is no problem.
Export from the US is.
Scopes are controlled for export by either the Department of State, or the Department of Commerce, depending on the scope.

Also, please review the CGN rules respecting the export of controlled goods out of the US.

Canada does not care if you bring a scope in to Canada. Just declare it's value. The US on the other hand requires a mountain of paperwork with the Department of Commerce to get permission to export same items. If you want to chance a random spot check on the American side that is your risk. Probable confiscation if caught.

Company's like IRunGuns have a dedicated team who export often and if you purchase from them it costs little or nothing. If it is a third party purchase expect to pay well for the same service.

PR did the importation for me, $50.00 for the import fee plus shipping to your house. Bought the 2 scopes in the states, mailed it to their U.S. exporter, exporter to Alberta.
