I recently purchase a new Marlin 1895 GBL in 45-70 from the local Crappy tire for $619.99. My old guy buddy has a sharps in 45-70 and was ponying up for dies so I figured I would get a 45-70 myself. I do the reloading so it is free dies for me
I bought one box of factory Winchester 300 grainers to test the gun out. I have never shot 45-70 and didn't know what to expect.
After getting the gun home I noticed that Marlin also includes a hammer spur with the gun. I thought it was a nice touch as I scope everything and would of had to buy one anyway. I had a old beat up but clear scope chief that would be perfect for this gun as its a 1.5-4.5. I also run a old command post scope chief on my .50 muzzleloader and they just plain get the job done.
One of the other huge points I give marlin is how smooth the lever cycle is. The gun is also just as smooth when cycling rounds thru it as it is empty.
I zeroed the scope turrets and went to the range. It was later in the day and I just wanted to try it so I only went to the 50 yard range. The first few shots were almost perfect windage wise but about 2ft low. 2 full turns thru the elevation was my guess to get me closer. Here's a pic of the gun and the last 2 rounds I fired.
I was almost a week getting her to the range as I had to make a new Para cord sling and wrap the lever. I know it was only 50 yards but it was factory ammo and I will be reloading for her. I'm really impressed with how it shoots. The sound it makes is also a fun time... Snow was falling off the covered roof at the range when I shot. The other guys said it made quite the noise lol.
The 44 mag is the gun she is replacing.
