I have heard the old say that you should not shoot steel shot through anything tighter than a modified choke. Lo and behold, I have an extended Browning Diana Grade Invector plus choke tube, that is marked "approved for steel". Has anyone shot steel shot through such a choke tube? Are there any shot size limitations? How does it pattern? Any risk of damaging the gun.

If safe, I would be using the tube on a Browning BPS pump shotgun. I will be shooting magnum and super magnum loads of #1 and #2 steel shot at snow geese.

That would be an old modified lead choke you referencethat you should not shoot steel shot through anything tighter than not an approved for steel choke many of those are even in full but approved full for steel
My brownings love the Diana Grade Invector Plus IM and I have shot up to duplexed bb/bbb with zero issues and patterns by far the best of any choke I have for the brownings

Just to make sure we are on the same page, the choke is marked IM, and is .025" constriction.

I have heard the old say that you should not shoot steel shot through anything tighter than a modified choke that is the comment the old lead modified is based on not the approved for steel IM that yours is marked for as you say

That is the exact same choke I used in one of my old Gold Stalker 3.5" and now use it in one of my SX3s with Challenger 3.5" Super Magnum #1 shot. You won't have any issues or damage at all!

...extended ... choke tube, ...

The extended tube is considerably thicker walled than the flush tubes. These thicker tubes can take the punishment much better than the flush designs. If damage occurs, it happens 'outside' the barrel and the choke can be discarded or replaced with no harm to the firearm itself.

You should have no issues with that IM up to BB. I expect it will pattern very well. We used the Mod in the same variety choke it work quite well.....on snow geese.

I dont have the percentages from the patterening session or I would share. I did not document them like I usually do. Safe to say 40 yards was easy stuff for the Mod with 1s and BB Kent 3" 1 1/4oz and 1 1/8oz loadings.
