Improving a 22LR hollow point......

Anything explosive yet or are we all simply tryingto match the Mighty Winchester Power-Point?

All the ideas are nice but when you have to modify thousands upon thousands of bullets, the nifty solutions lose their appear pretty quickly.

I once spent hours upon hours upon hours sorting a case of 5000 rounds for rim thickness. Turns out the gophers don't really care if the group is a few percent smaller. It was a ton of time completely wasted.

Having shot tens of thousands of gophers with all sorts of different kinds of rimfire ammo, the Winchester Power Point is the only one I use now. They are accurate and have the best terminal effects bar none, right out of the box, no screwing around required.

I did the pen trick on some AE22 and Power Points. It looks like a waste of time modding the Power Points, but the AE22 look pretty good. I haven't tried them yet though. The AE22 is on the bottom. I'll try them for accuracy in the spring and terminal effects in June or July.

I wasn't getting very good groups with my Quad, but near the end of my shooting season this year I realized the Quad's groups varied with how hard you pulled it into your shoulder, which I wasn't doing when I shot the Velocitors. I'm pretty much done for shooting groups this year and will have to wait until next Spring to get out again.

i penned up some AE22s afew weeks back and shot them for accuracy at 25m. The penning had no noticable effect on groupings at all. as for terminal ballistics, i have no idea because paper holes don't really tell much. Maybe i'll try to make a batch of gel blocks this weekend and do a late night trip to the indoor range.

went to the range last night. there didn't seem to be any expansion or fragmentation advantage from the rounds i shot, except for the first one. it made a massive cavity so i was very optimistic. sadly the other ones performed much like the regular HP. if it fragmented then i'm sure there would be a much bigger difference, but just penning it doesn't seem to do the trick. perhaps scoring a ring on the outside would cause the HP mushroom to fragment once it reached the ring. I should have tested power points too, but i didn't have any with me. maybe next time.

Yes, by all means do send all your hollow point ammo to me. Of course I will have to test them out on some gophers and I will report back on how they work. lol

There are lots of modifications that can be done to ammo and a great book on it is "Combat Ammo" by Duncan Long. Goes into detail about everything that can be done to all sorts of ammo, shotgun shells, .22 ammo, exploding handgun bullets all sorts of "for information only" type reading.

does it include the Tom Berringer (sniper) hand filing
method of sharpening his bullet points to fly better?:)
sorry , had to throw that one in.

Yah it's about a bunch of bubbahs standing around trying to think up ways of...
A) Waisting money.
B) Waisting time.
C) Re inventing the wheel.

Seriously buy another type of ammunition. :slap:

I am surprised that you waited til post 41 to say the above:D I am surprised that I waited and read til now and all I can say is that it it really cold out and I must be bored to read this far:eek:

Am admiring your targets, is that a Daliesque influence, is it you're an accountant, or just plain... well, not sober (suppose there could be covariance between the last two) :)

I was getting inspiration from Escher, mainly! :p

How long ago did I write any of this stuff, anyhow?

I've really got to update this thread...
