Improving a 22LR hollow point......

No worries cyclone, am a fan of MC Escher as well, keep up the good work.

Excellent cartoon :D - and since one good turn deserves another, or a few more ;) :

Loved the MacGyver one!

Back on topic, as you mentioned:

(gratuitous cluster of Goldens on the exit-side :D)

In summary: modding a .22 Rem Golden HP does not seem to have any huge initial implications on terminal effect, though you will see - if you peer close enough - the "entrance" is perhaps a bit cleaner for the modded round (and not just bigger due to the photography distances! ;)). Once through a small amount of "media", we can begin to see a more rounded "exit" from the modded Rem Golden.

That said, look at the Gratuitous cluster pic once again (which is from 2 drywood boards that lay behind the white boards I showed the initial exit "wounds" in)...the cluster on the right-hand side was created much earlier by a bunch of (say 10) unmodded Rem Golden's, while the left-hand cluster was mainly created by the 2 rounds fired for this test (the deeper hole was from the modded Rem Golden).

Is this earth-shatteringly important/cool?

Heck no!

...but it's fun! :)

Note: If you are using Photobucket and the camera on your cellphone, try the medium-sized setting on Photobucket..it aids clarity, doesn't detract from it. :)

That's it? This is the end of the experiment? No gophers torn asunder? No side by side photographs of targets showing un-modified and modified rounds from various distances?

How disappointing. The great experimenters ran out of energy or their ability to follow through on something expired.

Many, many years ago when I was a young boy there was an article in one of the major hunting/fishing magazines (maybe Outdoor Life) about filling the .22 hollow point cavity with bees wax. The article showed the results of regular hollow points vs wax-filled hollow points - shooting into large bars of soap. Much bigger hole made by wax-filled hollow points.
My buddy and I tried it out but for the work involved there was never much, if any, difference in the killing power when shot into groundhogs so we gave up on it.

What does work for larger hollow points (.38-55, .45-70 and up) is filling a large cavity with black powder and putting a percussion cap on top!

Try petroleum jelly instead of bees wax (as the latter costs $28/lb. in some shops) then cap it with a No.9 pellet. You can cover that with a topping of glue or nail polish or melt the pellet over the top of the bullet with a soldering iron or the like. The petroleum jelly need not be heated and poured like wax.
