Improving alignment on a plain barrel M37?

After missing more than the usual number of clays with my new-to-me Ithaca Model 37 plain barrel, I finally noticed that I was canting the gun a bit. Without a rib on the barrel, it was not obvious to me when I had things out of aligment before calling for the bird.

The knurled approach (to the non-existent rib) cut into the top of my Model 37's receiver is very shallow, making the receiver look almost smooth when looking down the sighting plane.

Any suggestions for improving the sighting plane to better indicate proper side-to-side alignment? I was thinking of a tiny dab of flourescent orange nail polish on the receiver.

A marker there will be distracting, I wouldn't do it.

Canting the gun is indicative of one of two things - improper mount, or improper stock fit. Get a buddy and mount the gun with your eyes closed. Let him observe your mount and the position of the gun when mounted and it should soon become apparent what the problem is.

If the problem is the mount, proper practice will cure it. If it is the stock fit, then an adjustable butt pad, leather strips or other appropriate fix is what will be required. Either way, you are far better off to remedy the problem at its source rather than attempt to correct it with a work-around.
