Just a thought experiment at this point - wondering what people might think.

I was contemplating the ammunition issue related to 16 gauges, and messing around with some spent shells, when I noticed something very interesting: a 20 gauge shell fits perfectly down a 16 gauge shell.

Wouldn't it be possible to take the rim of a 16 gauge shell, and ream it out to accept a 20 gauge shell?
This would only work if the gun locked up tight.

Reloading would be a bit of a paint, but wouldn't this work for a break down action?

The reason I got thinking of this was in trying to think of a way to safely shoot slugs out of a fixed full choke action.
If this works, a 20 gauge slug could conceivably be shot out of a 16 gauge.

Thoughts?

Take video.

You might be the next viral video sensation.

There are lots of easier ways to shoot the correct ammo out of a given firearm, we are not yet at video game levels of desperation.

FYI - for those considering this - upon further exploration, once you get it all reamed out and everything fits, the brass of the 20 gauge does not fit tightly into the brass of the 16 gauge, so if this was tried, there woudl be some risk of gas blow back.

Here's another idea I had - what if you took a 20 gauge bird shot shell, cut it off at the brass, removed the powder and removed the primer. Next, you put the primer in the 16 gauge shell, then the powder, then push the front part of the 20 gauge shell right into the 16 gauge shell. If you got this nice and tight, would this not be an effective slug in a pinch? I'd expect the 20 gauge plastic component to fly out whole, and because it is heavier at the front than at the back, should fly pretty straight.

Sure, go blow yourself up for fun. Just don't do it when anybody else is around.
Or you could buy some 16 ga. "dangerous Game Slugs" from Will Bilozir in Alberta. They are easy to load, shoot out of all chokes, and proper load data is available from the seller.

I'm not a knowledgable shot gunner apparently. I've shot them a lot, but never worried about the choke when shooting slugs. Why is this a concern?

Oh, and I love the 16 gauge, was my first shotgun - just to stay on track

Cheers,
D
