Just read that maybe I've bought the wrong powder for loading cast bullets for a 308. Opinion... am I wasting time with this powder and cast 308 bullets? Reading heavier cast bullets might be ok. Might have to bite the bullet and buy Varget or some other recommended powder. Why would cast make a difference

IMR3031, 4227,4198 and AA5744 will likely be the most useful powders, they cover pretty much all the bullet weights. It's possible that 4064 may work with some very hard cast bullets, I'd have to research that, there is a group of shooters that run cast at 2500fps plus, up to 3000 IIRC, pretty specialized discipline, They used to frequent Castpics, not sure it even has a forum there anymore, haven't looked seriously at that site in ages, some may post on CBA or Cast Boolits, fella named Larry ????? used to post on Cast Boolits, say 15 yrs ago, then he and some others started Castpics. They shot mostly all high speed stuff, 30BR was one I remember, some were heavily into, along with 308.

I’m not an expert with cast bullet shooting, it has to do with the “back pressure” required to fully burn the slower rifle Powders. A cast bullet takes less force to engrave the rifling and travel down the bore than a jacketed bullet. So you will generally need a fast rifle powder or slow pistol or shotgun powder.

What weight of bullet do you have?
How fast do you want it to go?
This info will guide some powder recommendations

Trying to get a microgroove rifle to not keyhole. Did have some success with a .314 160gr cast bullet. A fellow nut here sent me an assortment of sizes and weights. Just did the first trial so loaded it low. It did make a round hole. Was going to increase the powder next. Thinking of getting different powder now for the cast and trying the 4064 with some jacketed .312 see if they stabilize
