IMR 4198 vs. H4198 in the .222

I can't speak to the triple-deuce in particular, but I've had two rifles that wouldn't shoot worth a damn with an IMR version of one powder, but were exceptional with the Hodgdon's version of the same powder, or vice-versa. Most sources will say that the difference between H- and IMR of the same powder number is minimal, but sometimes it's all the difference in the world!
 
from my understanding the difference is the H is better suited for temperature extremes and stability.

on a side note i just bought some H4198, but for my S&W500, not for .222
 
I have a pound of the Hodgdon version. First batch of reloads stunk! I will be testing some new ones today. Only neck sized the new ones and seated them a lot closer to the lands. Hopefully that will work. I am using BR4 primers, 20.5 grains H4198, 50gr SPSX and Winchester brass - once time fired - possibly the reason of my first bad groups. Hopefully today's results will be better. Gun is a Sako vixen Varmiter.

I always had slightly better groups in mine with IMR 4198 also that is the only powder i have had go bad on me in the powder cabinet. 2 cans in the last 12 years, i use H322 now as it is very good as well and i have a 8 lb jug of it and a little goes a long way in the 222 and 204.
 
Cannot tell any difference in my 222, a 700 Classic.
However, this rifle prefers old Reloder 12 over any other powder.
W748 comes close, as does Norma 200, RL7 and Vihtavuori N133.

19.8 grains IMR 4198 with 50 grain sierra bullets set back from lands .010".its what my savage 340b and my savage 340c likes the best.it also does well with 45 grain sierra round nose bullets over 21.0 grains of the same powder.the brass is winchester/federal/privi.primers are cci small rifle.
