I recently cam across a great deal on this powder and now have 13 pounds to utilize.

I am currently reloading 30-30 and .303.

I have many different 30-30 projectiles, but I mainly shoot bullet barn 165 grain blunts - they are cheap and well made, great for casual shooting. My manual shows loads for this caliber using this powder, but not this projectile; closest it has is a 170 grain. Starting load for this is 18 grains of 4198 and will push 1,606 fps, so I'd think that this would also be a fine starting load for my 165's. Anyone have experience or pet loads with the above they'd like to share? I'm also using magnum primers, but I can't tell a difference between them and the CCI200's I was using before they ran out in my other 30-30 loads. The manual also has a 4198 load for 173 grain blunts and claims it to be the most accurate, but that projectile is noticeably heavier than mine.

Again, I've got lots of different 30-30 projectiles, but aside from the bullet barn ones they are rather pricey Sierra and Hornady examples best saved for hunting, etc. I'm looking for a plinking load.

Also, would anyone know of a .303 load for imr4198? My manual has no loads described for this caliber in any bullet weight, but I don't know that it makes it dangerous to use - it's a fast burning powder with lots of loads for many calibers.

"...closest it has is a 170 grain..." That'll do. 5 grains won't matter.
No data usually means no testing done with it. However, fast burning is likely why.
"...Starting load for this is 18 grains..." 21.0 according to Hodgdon's site.

Hm. My Lyman manual starts at 18, maxes out at 24. That's a notable difference.

Also, the cast projectiles mentioned are gas checked, the ones I am using are not.

Regardless, I'll start low and develop from there. It's half the fun, right?

Still interested to know if anyone has experience with these components in a load, and especially the .303 question.

I haven't shot any of my 303's lately but I keep good records as well as targets. Have shot some good groups with H4198 in the past. Bullet was GC'd 311299 sized .314. Loads were 20.0 up to 22.0 grs. IMR 4198 should have a similiar burn rate. I used H4198 only because it meters better.
ALWAYS check a couple reliable sources before trying "internet" loads.

Of course. But H4198 and I4198 are not the same - similar, but not the same. In what I can tell (again, taking internet facts with a few salt grains) H burns a little hotter and meters a little stickier, having somewhat longer rods. I use H4198 to reload .303 now, but I didn't want to just start throwing my journal charges with the IMR. They must have different names for a reason and I'm just trying to err on the side of caution.

Regardless, I think I have some good starting data, and I'll develop some safe loads and go from there.

303 with 4198. Speer #12 book Use 21 to 25 gr. If bullet is not gas checked, watch for problems as you go hotter.

Don't have the speer book, but thanks for the info. I'm currently loading Hornady BTHP jacketed projectile, but I will be moving over to the 180 grain bullet barn casts, which are gas checked.

If you want to try out plain cast at higher velocities you may want to look into paper patching. There's a whole forum dedicated to paper patching on Cast Boolits. The slick thing is that the paper patching removes the speed limit on cast bullets of around 1500 fps. And for a .303 that would seem to be worth considering.

So does wrapping the bullet with teflon plumber's tape so the wrap tightens with the rifling.Harold
