IMR 4350 for .308?

Like it says, is IMR 4350 good for loading 150 gr. bullets in a .308? Im asking because my manual doesnt list it as a recommended powder until you get up to 180 gr. bullets. could somebody please help a junior reloader out?

I think you will find it too slow for "light" bullets. Burn speeds in the Varget/IMR 4064 range perform well in the 308.... and with anything heavier than 150's..you are already compressing loads long before you hit the recommended max's.
 
ya i noticed that too (compressed loads) and it kinda sucks because i already bought the powder... oh well have to save it till i need it and buy some 4320 for now or something.
 
Try the H 335 in your .308 with 150 gr bullets .I find it to be an excellent powder.it is a spherical powder that meters very well and produces good velocitys.
 
There's a saying to the effect that if your .308 won't shoot IMR 4895 well,then you have a gun problem. For a 150 gr bullet any of IMR 4895, IMR 4064, IMR 3031, W748, H335, Varget, or BLC2 are the "go to" choices.

You now have a reason to get another rifle. ( to use up that powder) ;)

Just study the loading manuals to figure out your cartridge of choice.
 
All other excellent advice aside, that's not to say you can't have an accurate load with 4350. You can, and if you are just intending something for paper/light game out to, oh, I don't know, 300 yards maybe, you can still give that powder a go. I've used it with lighter bullets and it can be extremely accurate in some cases. You won't get the best performance if you are after a longer range load or after heavy game, but it can produce some surprising results as a paper-puncher for practice.

58 gr IMR 4350
150gr Hornady FMJ/BT

at a hundred hard range Im still hitting the target within 2 inches of where I placed the cross hairs, maybe not as good as the nosler 165gr - Im no internet marksmen, Im happy to hear a boom and see a hole punched in the paper close to where I wanted to see it...

Load info for 308 win 180 gr with 4350

Start load 46.0 grs 2321 fps
mid load 48.0 grs 2427 fps
Max load 50.0 grs 2511 fps

Info is from a speer reloading manual, use caution when approaching higher loads.
 
"...compressed loads..." Nothing to worry about.
"...my manual doesnt..." Just means IMR4350 wasn't tested when the data was developed. My old Lyman book gives 46.0(2481 fps) to 52.0(c)(2849 fps) for a 150.
IMR4064 shines in the .308. Gives more consistent accuracy than other IMR powders out of a .308(out of a .30-06 too).
A 165 grain bullet will kill any game you care to hunt. They're a good all 'round bullet.
