As the title says, just looking to see if anyone uses IMR 4895 with .308, 175 SMK'S and 178 AMAX in particular with good results. Reason for asking is I have only been reloading for just over a yr and a half and have only used Varget with great results, with no reason to change. Getting down to the last few pounds of Varget and with the shortage of powder these days I am looking for alternate powders. I managed to get 5 lbs of IMR 4895 from a co-worker so wondering if anyone has any input good or bad. Thanks.

I use IMR 4895 and 175 SMK in my M1A with fantastic results. I am assuming you are referring to a bolt gun though. No other way to tell if it will work with your rifle but to try it. 5 lbs is plenty to figure out if the powder will work with your setup with more than 4.5lbs to spare! All rifles are different remember. I am using Varget as well in my 308 bolt gun and decided to try H380 and BL-C(2). Both preformed extremely well with BL-C(2) being a little better. You never know until you try. Good luck!

I was shooting 4895 with 178gr hpbt a while back, but dont have my data handy. They shot very well.

I reload 4895 in my M1 garand and use a 168gr hornady HPBT and get really good results..

trim brass to 2.495"
IMR 4895 47gr
Hornady 168 HPBT
COAL 3.30"

here is where i got my load info to give credit (not my site) this load IS M1 safe with factory gas plug, I had an adjustable in and started wide open and closed down till i had to shut it completely to get it to cycle reliably.
