I have to buy some new powder to load up 500 rounds for a rifle course I am thinking of taking this summer. I have reasonable 50 and 55 grn V max loads developed with IMR 4895 but a friend suggests that he finds better results with Hodgdon 4895 for these types of loads. I know that every rifle is different but is there a general consensus that one manufacturer is usually better than the other for this application? I am interested if anyone has noticed any real world difference? My rifle is a Ruger M77 heavy barrel. Thanks.

The main reason that I usually choose H4895 over the other is the temperature insensitivity issue. I have not found better performance one or the other in the loads I have tried otherwise.

H4895 gives about 100 to 200 fps more velocity, but can use a wee bit more powder. The amount of powder isn't consistently more with any bullet weight though.
Both are Hodgdon powders now. Made in different factories. Seems to me the IMR is made in Canada, the H in Australia.
Wouldn't hurt to work up an H4895 load. No guarantee it'll make any difference though.
You may want to try a heavier bullet too. Ruger uses a 1 in 9 rifling twist for .223.
