As someone that's just getting started in reloading I have a question for you all. From what I understand the 7828ssc meters much easier than 7828 but you will loose out some load density. The cartiridge I'll be using it in is 257 weatherby mag. According to Barnes at max load with the 100gr tsx the LD is 88% with the 7828ssc from what I've been reading that's still an acceptable L.D. but a higher L.D. is usually preferred. So my question is would it be more beneficial to scrafice some ease of metering of the 7828ssc for the higher L.D of the old 7828?

Thanks

I think that load density is just one of those nice comforting theories that you'd have ##### of a time proving improves accuracy. Mind you, I'm not comparing a case full of 7828 to 5 grains of Bullseye sloshing around on the bottom. Many of my best loads have some rattle-room, and some that are nothing to write home about are compressed. Or the other way around.

I've had good luck with old style 7828 in the .257, .270 and .300 Weatherbys, and my current loads for all three are with this powder. I haven't ruled out witchcraft, but that's hard to prove or disprove as well.

I've used both in the .257 Wby mag, and saw absolutely no difference in my results using the same recipes. Use what you've got or what's easy to get.

As stated above, work up to those max charges, both for safety (especially with Barnes bullets) and accuracy. None of my .257's have ever been at their most accurate with max loads. I'm not saying yours won't be, but you don't know unless you give every load a fair shake.

Also, check your twist rates with Barnes bullets. They don't always stabilize in slower twist barrels. 257 Wby often come 1:10, and Barnes often states 1:9 or faster. Not sure about those 100 LD's you're using though.

I have used both the SC and regular in my 257 WM Vanguard. I use same recipes and both shoot 3/4 inch groups with 115 nosler Ballistic tips. I use 69 grains which is by no means max but my gun does like to run on the higher side as most 257 WM do. In regards to the Barnes 115 and stabilization.... I contacted Barnes and they said the stand 1-10 twist is fine out a 257 WM to stabilize these bullets. They did tell me that it is more of an issue with the slower running quarter bores. I have also shot the 115 Bergers and they stabilize fine as well.
