IMR ammo can with a price tag

I have a DuPont can of 4320 that says Improved military powder on the can with a price tag of $4.75. About how old is this can with this retail price? FS

Hmmm. I bought my first can of smokeless powder at William's Arms in 1989. If memory serves, it was IMR 4895 and the price was $17. So powder prices haven't even doubled in over 20 years. That would suggest your can is at least 60 years old.

The price on the can doesn't tell us much. See if you can find a Lot # on the can which might help. Dupont started making propellant powder in 1802. The canister pictured below was probably made in the 1930's

This!! Similar prices to those I remember in that era.
If you look on the back of the can, you might see a group of numbers that look like this: G67BB21A
4122

This number indicates the powder was made in 1967, 4122 is the lot number.

A friend of mine has imr 4831 that has price of 2.50. Was sold in 1950.

That's close.
I would say late, late 50's to very early 60's.

Why?
I was there and have seen those cans.

In 1975 that powder was $8.00. I bought a new Sako varmint rifle in Edmonton from Irv.
Who now has or had Western Gun Parts. Rifle and Leupold fixed 12 power for $250. I also bought a few cans of IMR4320. Still using 4320 for that rifle. Fourth barrel mind you.

Is there a big market for old powder cans? Are they considered collectables by many?

Maybe I should hold on to my powder containers... Might be worth something in 50 years lol!

I helped operate a sporting goods store in central BC in the mid 60s.
I really don't think that IMR powder sold for 4.75 at that time. I think it was less. I started a lot of people reloading, so sold quite a lot of components and equipment. We sold more Norma than anything else, both factory loads and reloading components. All brands of powder was aout the same, and we sold Norma factory loads for exactly the same as Dominion Ammunition. Whille we were in the store factory ammo took quite a jump, with retail having to be 4.95 a box for standard 30-06 and similar class.
There's a good chance I have an old Norma can around that might have the price on it. I will later look.
I know at the store we got a 50 pound keg of H4831 war surplus, delicered to our store for $18. We doled it out in 5 pound bags and sold them for 2.50. a 5 pound bag.
I still have some of that bulk H4831 and it works perfect.
