I know they are technically the same company but, is IMR 4895 and H4895 balistically the same stuff?

H4895 is gold/tan colour while IMR 4895 is black. They smell the same, like cough medicine.

Are they interchangeable?

No

They are different powders with different burning rates. Even though Hodgdon did buy IMR recently the powders are not the same. The IMR version is still being made in Canada while the Hodgdon version is purchased from ADI in Australia and re-packaged in the USA

Read your manual and you will see different charges for IMR and Hodgdon powders across the board. Some are close, but as far as I've seen none are exactly the same. I know two guys came close to disaster by confusing IMR 4831 and H4831.
4895's are closer. IMR 4350 is just a bit faster than H4350----but both are much slower than Accurate 4350. :confused: ?
It's buyer beware.
 
They are generally very similar. As a good reloading practice, you should work up your loads that are at least 10% less the max listed, regardless whether you switch to either IMR from Hodgdon or vise-versa, or even when you switch to a different batch of the same powder :)
 
I was under the impression that H powders of 4895, 4350, and 4831 names were a hair slower burning than IMR powders.

"...I'll need to up the charge..." Change the load and you'll have to sight in again. Change the powder and you'll have to work up the load again.
 
Yeah, the sighting may be an issue. I've never loaded max, I'm always well under.

No point pounding my shoulder as I only shoot target. 50 - 100 rounds every trip to the range. :)
