IMR Red powder

Bought some IMR Red to load 12ga target loads. Man this stuff is dirty, and does it every stink when fired. Are all IMR shotgun powders dirty and smelly?

I used some in the 38 special. Might have had a slight different smell. But wasn't any dirtier than my usual load of Bullseye.

Was the load light? Low pressure causes problems.

I haven't loaded it in shotgun but use it lots in reduced rifle loads. I find it clean burning in that application but the rounds are making some healthy pressure.

How many grains are you using now?

Will double check the bushing tomorrow, but I believe its #29, which should be 18.2gr. Winchester hulls, CB1100 wads

It is a #30 bushing so should be around 19gr. I am using Cheddite primers, maybe need something else?

It's funny to hear that that series of powders would be dirty, as Hodgdon claimed they were much better than the unnamed original ones.

Meanwhile I think that IMR 700-X is the cleanest of all the American Pistol/Shotgun powders I have used (in pistols)...

^ claybuster wads. I have 5 lbs of this powder to burn, then will try something else. Cant stand the smell.

Have you verified the drop weights with a scale?
