IMR4198 versus H4198

They are slightly different powders with slightly different burn rates.

Checking the Hodgdon load data site it would appear they may be able to be interchanged at starting loads. For a 55gr copper jacketed lead core bullet in a 223 the starting load for H4198 is 19.0gr and for IMR4198 is 18.8gr.
I would just check load data for the specific powder I was using personally. Maybe in some cartridges there is a larger gap.

"...What's the difference..." Not much. IMR4198 is #71 on the burn rate charts. H4198 is #72. The IMR gives a wee bit less velocity with like bullet weights. Light .308 loads. The data is not interchangeable though.
Like numbered IMR/Hodgdon powders are usually like that. Very close, but not identical.

IMR4198 and H4198 are as different to each other as are many lots of IMR4198 (or H4198).

Of course if you work up in increments of 0.1 grs and carefully watch for "pressure signs"", you'll be able to easily detect the point where one's completely safe and the other ís a disaster in the making. ;)

Seriously, I've used them interchangeably for years, even chronied them to compare and though different powders, they are so alike as to be the same for practical purposes.

I've tried both and settled on H4198. I reload 7.62x39 for my CZ bolt action and found H4198 burnt cleaner and left less powder residue. Other than that it was a toss up. If I can't get the H, I'll pickup the IMR if available.
I use IMR 4198 for my model 94 30-30.
Both powders are great for carbine length barrels as they burn fairly quickly and don't produce fireballs.

Care to share your favoured brew on this? I picked up 13 lbs of IMR4198 for a song, and I shoot a '94 30-30 carbine. I have a few loads that work well, but I wouldn't say that I've got the perfect load for it yet and am still tinkering.

I'm still tinkering too. Mine was built in 1976 and purchased brand new that year. I put maybe 40 rounds through it in all that time. Never liked how she felt with factory loads. Last year I decided to reload for it and have had fun plinking with it. I'm not a hunter any more.

My last reloads were 21.1 grains of IMR 4198 topped with a 150 grain RN from Hornady. Mild recoil and verrry accurate. About an inch group at 100 yds with a Williams aperture sight installed. Youngest son shooting. Better eyes than me.

Tried IMR 4064. Kicked like a mule, big-arsed fireball, and sprayed bullets everywhere.

IMR 4198 is also a standard powder in the .222 ,I also load 150gr .311 Sierras in a SKS with 21 grs of IMR 4198 and they shoot very well.Harold
