Just looking for info on the legalities around shooting on public land...

If I'm not intending to harvest an animal, can I go for a drive into a prescribed hunting zone, pull off somewhere, go a certain number of meters from the highway, set up a measured range and do some shooting?

You can camp free I guess, when hunting... its all open wilderness... so same deal?

I might want to go camping, I can always shoot a few wild chickens for dinners.. We did that when I went hunting with my old boss.

I might want to go for an afternoon though with a couple friends... just set up shop and plink.. target shoot etc.

Can someone link me/explain to me the rules for this so I don't end up crawling with fish and wildlife officers?

Especially important, if all i'm doing is plinking.. can i go year round or should i stick to certain times that coincide with hunting?

There's no adventure in a firing range at a gun club, when I really need to get out and explore more!

That you need to do during hunting season, and you need to have the proper licenses. Other than that, just make sure that you are on public land, and not on private property.

In Alberta, you do not need a hunting licence if you aren't hunting. You can go onto crown land and as long as the bylaws permit firearms discharge you can plink.

If you want to hunt you do need a licence, and must do it in season. Overnight stays are regulated as well in some areas.

Google will be your friend on this one, everywhere is different, you have to be concerned about private vs crown/public land, bylaws etc....

At least places in Alberta where you can shoot you are pretty much left alone and not guilty of poaching when plinking like some of the communist provinces in Canada.

You would need a game bird licence for the wild chickens.

You will run into fish and wildlife, it's not an "if" it's a solid "when".

They will ask what your doing, they will want to see papers, don't be upset it's there job.

Have your Reggie's and any other papers handy, keep your camp clean, just be adult about it and tell them what your doing and why.

For crown land maps check out your local municipal office, a copy of the hunting regulations has alot of usefull info in it as well as maps!

Have fun.
