In China for a month

Range Report on the Type 81 before anyone in Canada gets one! :p Ha! Wheaty, do you mean RPG or RPK? I see they do mortars but man I'd love to blow s**t up with an RPG...just once...or ten times :p

wow people want to save on shipping from china :) buy it locally less hassle and headache. We import SKS and ammo from Russia. Get it there and try putting it into your lagage and you will get at least 5 years in a stinky jail. AsSSS woping every day from big Jong and one bowl of rice for a day meal. Trying to save money on shipping is priceless. :0

Ive always understood the low price we see in Canada comes from buying in huge quantities. They certainly wouldnt sell SKS individually in China or Russia for the unit price you buy them for before all the other work goes into getting them out of the country and into Canada. They'd probably be going for less than a pack of cigarettes if they did. Same thing with ammo, its just not a "buy direct and save" kind of thing. At least not individual sales, which I doubt is even possible over there. I'm sure the new made tacticool stuff is cheaper there (China) however.

I went to that shooting range this April. None of the heavier stuff (PKM rpg .50s) were available. They do chain down the rifles. I blew about 1500$ on ammo. The prices are not cheap. 5.56 was about a dollar around if I remember.... great time though. It was in the middle of no where. Bring your passport as it is a military base and they take all your info. You can pay cash debit or credit. It is the nicest range I have ever been to.

Don't worry, you won't go to prison for posting on here about wanting to shoot or export ammo. I posted on CGN my entire trip last year, and I was posting in the firearms and politics section. They really won't care unless your trying to conspire to take down the gov't or spread rumors that would promote unrest. Unlike %99 of the people on these forums, I have actually been to China, I own property there, I visit there and I follow whats going on in the country from reliable sources ;)

When your in the local markets check out the SKS pellet guns that could easily pass as the real deal. Also you will find tons of millitary style shops around the major cities selling Aimpoint/eotech/trijcon clones as well as tactical vests and replica guns that look legit! There is a lot of cool millitary stuff in the markets, I brought home some medals, badges, and patches for some of my CF friends, I even got some cool Mao era stuff.

You won't find ammo, and if you were able to get in contact with a manufacturer, you would need an export license to get it out of China and Into Canada, it is really not economically viable. Don't bother trying to shoot over there, there is far to much red tape to get onto a base to shoot unless you have a connection.

Enjoy your trip, China is an amazing country and you will probably learn more about it on your stay than you will from people on these boards. The food is great, there is tons to see and do and the people there are really nice.

Thanks for the informative reply!

I've actually been here for a couple months already working. Do you know where any of these 'military style' shops are in Shanghai?

Considering firearms are totally illegal in China (Expect for some minorities) I would not search for any ammo or firearms. However China does have some cool military related things. So here are some recommendations and they are all in Beijing

1.China North International Shooting Range

Its the only range I know in China that is open to the public, yes you can shoot a full auto type 56 but ammo is very expansive like 2 or 3 Dollar a round of 7.62x39. But there is a small museum there and its very cool.

2.The Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution

Pretty much a museum of Chinese military history, its got a ton of Japanese weapons and American lend lease and even a few Canadian rifles from Korea, it has a tank depot thats full of lend lease and soviet era tanks worth the trip

3.The Chinese Aviation Museum

I really consider this place a must go to spot for any one who is even remotely interested in military aviation. Its really remote so there will not be many people there, when i was there me and my dad where the only people there ( a very very rare thing in China). They have literally dozens and dozens of mig 17 and 19s just left out side along with assort of 50-70 ear aircraft (nato ones too), SAM old short range nuclear missles helicopters and AAA. All the AAA appears to be just left out there they still traverse and elevate, its amazing how you can move a 85mm gun with out much muscle. in short a really cool place.

Chinese Uniforms can be found everywhere but the quality is low so buyer beware.

Have fun

On yeah one more thing about The Chinese Aviation Museum.

You can go inside the cockpit on all the planes on the tarmac. I climbed into a Mi 4, the #### pits are very high off the ground :p

I can't remember exact locations, but they are literally all over the place. As you wander out of the bigger malls you will see a lot of hole in the wall shops in the alleys. It is a huge fashion trend/lifestyle there a la' Militia in the US. There is a large emerging gun culture there particularly with the youth. You might notice a lot of "gun ####" magazines at the news stands, pretty much giant glossy pics of tricked out guns. Also universities and schools are now offering marksmanship for students hence the stellar showing from China at the 2008 olympics shooting section (they had more qualifiers than the USA 26 vs 24... and compare Canada with only a handful). So perhaps a lot of people on these boards might re-think their perspective on China and guns because I see a growing gun culture there.

Note China had the most gold medals for shooting, and the most medals overall for shooting sports. While most medals came from air rifle and air pistol, they took gold for both men and women in 50 meter rifle, and bronze for double trap... not bad.

Back on topic; You can find tons of military stores there. I bought some gear over there just for gifts and it was pretty good stuff would make you king #### of an air soft field lol. I have some pics at home on my macbook that I can link later.

Also go to the inner city markets and underground markets (not black market, just literally under ground) you can find so many cool things there like old surplus millitary garbs and equipment that is mixed quality, shop around and you can find some sweet deals. If your into blades, they have some sweet knife shops around, I picked up some switch blades to play with while I was on my trip just cause they were $5 (no i didn't bring them back). I also went to the benchmade store in one of the malls and bought a few items, they were about the same price as here so it was not really a deal, but we don't have any good knife store in Nova Scotia so it was a treat for me.

As has been said, there are some ranges there, but its expensive and a long way out of the city... that being said they are amazing quality. I thought you were there for a short vacation so I was saying don't waste your time trying to shoot, but if your there for work then for sure take the time to go out and blow some money!

Another cool thing are the military museums and some bases will have demonstration days. I went to a base in Beijing and got to watch some of the soldiers doing some morning drills warming up for China day last year. It was pretty cool

Also as has been said, firearms have been largely prohibited for ownership in china... however there were exceptions for sport shooters and hunters. I have a friend in China whose uncle still has dewat hunting rifles from back when it was still largely legal (not that long ago), mostly small bore shotguns that he used to use for bird hunting.

I loved my trip to China, I wouldn't want to live there permanently, but I found it an amazing place to visit and do business. I am headed back again this year for 2 months in December so I am excited to check out more of the country. Oh and before I get painted as a chicom, I am also headed to Florida to visit

@Marcus_Halberstram, good for you, ignorence is bliss. ;)

hmm ! not sure if this is realted but if you want to shot RPG, RPK or PKM then go ahead and visit Cambodia. You can even drive a T54 and shot a couple rounds if you are willing to blow out some US dollar.

You need a connection otherwise you will charge per bullet like 1 $ but it wasn't that bad since they are full auto.

As for me, I shot M16, Type 56 and PKM by exchange with 3 cases of beer at the military base. I paid extra 50 $ to shot RPG per rocket.

Hope it help.
