In-laws are AWESOME!

Thank you Mwjones and cyclone that is tons of help, I do plan on picking up some 7.62NATO, but just can't seem to find any hanging around... Anybody else see some lurking around on the net?

You win at life, good sir. The daughter of a man with 12.6 on his license has to be a wonderful woman, with such an upstanding father.:D

It's not based on the 98 mauser design, it's an ORIGINAL 1893 mauser that's been fitted with a new, shorter barrel in 1916, and rebarreled again in the 50s to 7.62.

edit: actually, check the makers mark. The 1893s were made in germany. some of them were actually made in 1916 i believe, in spain, but they're 193 action.

I haven't seen any 7.62 Nato surplus lately, but if I were you I would pick up some brass and work up my own load. I like IMR 4895, and you would probably be looking at 42-44 grains (start light and see how the rifle likes it).

Considering your father in law is a gun guy and he gave you some 7.62x51 surplus I bet he knows a thing or two about small ring mausers and the 308 Win / 7.62x51 debate. Talk to him about it, maybe this would be a good opportunity to learn about reloading (if he does that sort of thing).

You could try getting yourself some inexpensive plain jane ammo say a 150 grain load, then put one round into the sucker and fire it remotely - make a cradle out of some 2x4's and clamp the rifle in there, then tie a string to the trigger, hide behind something solid and pull on the string. Take a good hard look at the brass afterwards and watch out for a stiff bolt, split necks, flattened or cratered primers, or bright rings at the base of the cartridge. If there's any of that going on then you'll know for sure the action isn't strong enough for 308 win.

I'd go for the reloading before that though :)

Sounds like you have a great family, some guys can only dream of having in laws like that :)

Nice gift! all i got was a .303 British sporterized!! But being an experienced trapper/hunter from FT Vermillion, the father in law swears by them, and now i love it to...being father of 4..2 girls, and having 12(6),your post has made me think about future 12(6) GIFTS....yaaa!!!

Factory .308 is no problem in this rifle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.308_Winchester

SAAMI considers the 7.62x51mm and Winchester .308 interchangeable.

The wife got me my Tok TT-33 for my 26th Birthday. And her Dad is letting me use his shop to build my gun cabinet. so far its looking great. Life is good!
