Finally got some long distance shots in with my sks today...she keeps suprising me every time I shoot her. Stretched out to 325 meters in my favorite shooting spot and rang my 8" gong every shot, lined up a coleman propane tank and took 3 shots to pop. Checked my paper and put a 5 shot group just inside the 5.5" mark with one in the 10 ring and two in the 8. Shes impressed me to the point that she deserves a rail and scope this week.

Any one have experience scoping these guns what kind of scope can I get away with, Id like to stretch out some 400-500meter shots. Would a bushnell banner suffice? My local wallymarts clearing out one for under $70

two questions involved here-as you are at the normally accepted maximum effective range of the 7.62x39 now-I would say forget the scope-you are shooting damn fine now!

However-if you still want to mount scope-is it to be mounted on receiver cover or forward as a scout set-up ??-if the former-the Banner won't last long with the straight up ejection that most SKS'S (mine included) exhibit-it will batter the @#$% out of the objective end of the scope, resulting in early;perhaps immediate; scope failure-if the latter, you need a Long Eye Relief scope

If I was you,and shoot so well with the stock SKS sites-I might be inclined to investigate peep sites for the receiver cover/integrated with the receiver cover and an adjustable front post-the longer site radius normally makes sighting easier and quicker...

my 2 cents worth...

PS-you gotta re-name your thread-the missus thought I was on a #### site !:)

With this level of reported accuracy, you should be posting this within the precision rifle sub-forum.

Edit: There is going to be a lot of skeptics out there with a modest rifle of this vintage and war surplus ammunition. Is this a repeatable condition or just a one off with a blue moon in full alignment with the universe?

At least this one won't marry you to get citizenship status and then leave and take half your stuff back to the mob.

The scope thought was because my eyes are under considerable strain past 150m, and im just not a big fan of the sks irons. That and the wartak rail is a regular stock item at my local wholesale sports. And yes it was repeatable very much, 325 was my start for the day I had targets at 250, 150 and 100 as well mind you Im not shooting surplus rather new ukranian from canda ammo and my sks was 2 months of searching through many many sks' s till I found my lady.
Scope would be nice just to actually see what Ive hit without jumping in the truck and driving down to see.
Sorry about the post title.. my wifes half russian so she thought I was writing about her anyhow

It's OK-it wouldn't be the first time I've been on a #### site...
PS-invest in a spotting scope...makes life so much easier-AND if your significant other has ANY interest in the sport-they can spot for you-and vice-versa...bonding thru shooting...

Yeah... spotting scope .. Im a bit of a cheapass with some things. Ive had my kids out trying to spot with low powered binoculars but there not the best at spotting..um yep, I think u hit it wait um I dont know looks low or a bit high.

I forgot to add that I intend to use this as a hunting rifle next year for deer and hopefully black bear within 150 yds, Ive been testing soft points and home made hollow points which seem to pack sone destructive whallop.

I would not hunt past 100m with my sks unless you are very confident in your shooting skills and the rifle is zeroed perfectly. Its just not a responsible thing to do.

Magwedge Gen2 rail (magwedge.com) Canadian made and site sponsor.

Vomz Pilad 1.2x - 6x scope (bought it off Corwin-Arms a while ago, no longer on their site, not sure if discontinued or just out of stock).

Currently getting 3" groups at 100m with Hornady SST ammo. Still working on the rifle to see if I can tighten that up a bit. That was in essentially bone stock config - other than the rail and scope.

Have since removed the bayo - and plan to shim the action, maybe do a trigger job.

Have a thread started discussing the project, will update it with more info when I have some.

Silver spray paint the center on black sprayed steel with the sun behind me thats the only way I could see it, takes my eyes a good minute to focus on it then my eyes are screwed for the next ten minutes trying to refocus.

Grelmar love the setup actually looked on corwins website last night looking for scopes like the idea of a russian scope for a russian gun.
Ive compared the two rails side by side magwedge and wartaks, for $40 price difference I have a hard time supporting magwedge. If I were planning on keeping my front sight post Id be inclined to pick up the magwedge, but the post will find its way to the bottim of my gun safe with the rest of he sks parts.

I would just get your local gunsmith to drill the receiver cover and put a rail on. I did that and put a cheap 3x-9x scope on my SKS. The scope sits far enough back that I took off the shell deflector I had installed. So far it hasn't got loose and holds zero. I tried a bunch of scope mounts and they all eventually failed. Drilling works. You need a decent SKS (and plenty of skill) to start with to make the long shots. I stand in awe of anyone who can shoot well at 300+ metres with the SKS and iron sights. Well done! No way I can shoot without a scope beyond 100m.

Now I'm trying to get a scope on my Mosin Nagant.

#### site, you mean Wanstalls, Wolverine Supplies or SFRC?

Love the glass on that scope - really high quality, very impressed with the scope overall, lot of bang for the buck with Vomz. You might want to IM Martin from Corwin through this site. Rumor has it that he has some of the Gen 1 Magwedge rails he's willing to let go for $60 a pop - which is a pretty fair deal and might save you a few bones.

The downside to the Vomz (just being honest here) compared to more expensive scopes isn't in the glass or the reticle - it's in the fit and finish and weight of the tube. There's always a tradeoff when you go with less expensive scopes. They're well built and feel like they'll last a long time (have 2 now, picked up a 2-10x recently for a different build), but you do pay a weight price, and the controls aren't quite as smooth as the more expensive scopes. Very much a trade-off I'm willing to make for the $$ saved.
