Hi all, I recently came into a 577 Snider rifle. The stock has been cut down destroying most collector value, but the action and barrel are in very good condition. I am hoping to shoot this rifle. I have read/watched Youtube (never thought I would be saying that) and have seen 24 gauge shotgun brass being shortened for suitability into reforming into 577 Snider brass. So, does anyone know where I can purchase either 24 gauge shotgun brass, or 577 Snider brass ? Yes, I know 10 X produces loaded ammunition in the USA but importation into Canada is not authorized. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I would really like to shoot this rifle.

Thanks

Jim

Just google "xring services 557 snider" he sells brass made from the shotgun brass on other forums around $45.00 for 25 he's in Washington state but ships to canada

I bought 24gauge brass at the last gun show in Edmonton there was 2 dealers selling it there (maybe paid $40 for 25shells?). Calgary gun shows would also be a place to look. So try gun shows.

Shooter's Choice in Waterloo, Ont. carries Bertram brass. $139.95 per 20. Find bullets first. Might be harder to find than brass.
If the guy in Washington State ships brass to Canada, he's going to get stomped on by the U.S. Dept. of State, sooner or later. Not your problem though. Think its a 6 figure fine and possible jail time.

Shotgun brass is not subject to the same restrictions under ITAR as rifle/handgun brass, so this general statement is incorrect. However once they have been re-formed to something different, it may indeed fall under ITAR (depending upon interpretation). Hopefully he's done his homework. And it may not only end up "his" problem depending upon the circumstances so some due diligence on the buyer's end should also be exercised.

Good tip on Shooter's Choice.

This. Great service and an excellent product. He works these into Martini-Henry brass as well.

Will Bilozir is on the gun-show circuit quite a bit.

Last couple of times the poor guy has hit Brandon, he has been mobbed for his 24-bore brass Magtech casings and all those bags of 100 each 24-gauge Fiocchi primed cases.

If you are not heading toward a gun show in Alberta or Saskatchewan fairly soon, you can contact him at bilozir.net. He lives not far South of Calgary.

The plastic shotgun casings can be tapered at the mouths after you chop them down by making up a taper die, heating the case-mouth in boiling water and shoving it into the greased die for a couple of seconds. Then you dry it carefully, load an go knock down a mountain or something.

There is NOTHING more fun, shot for shot, than a Snider!

24 guage Mag tech brass shot gun hulls is the way to go cut to length and away you go run through sizing die works great .

If the gun is in good shape don't cheap out- buy a 2 cavity mold from Lee for the proper bullets, MagTech brass and good dies .
The accuracy of the Sniders we shoot surprises the heck out of people!

lee don't make a snider mold most snider want bullets around .585"-.595" conical bullets and .585"-.600" round balls 3 groove slow twist sniders want short conical bullets and round balls where the 5 groove fast twist can stabilize just about any length of bullet

One mold that I have great results with is a LEE 575-500 Minie. Cheap starter mold.

Conicals are an afterthought, you have to get the right one for your Snider.

We shoot a lot of Sniders at our club.

LEE dies

MagTech brass

Large Pistol Primer

50 grains FFG

Cornmeal

LEE 575-500 Minie, lubed with your favourite BP Lube and your off to the races.

No need to resize the brass for a long time.

Best cast bullet results as of today - Moose Moulds - Wilkinson - 580-450 and same recipe as above.

That's very interesting, they must have quit, because mine was made by Lee and designed by Kerry Jenkinson- I bought it from Higginsons.
It has a single lube groove and ius super accurate in four different Sniders my friend and Ii have used the bullet in.
Here is what the bullet looks like
