Took mine to the range this week. Recoil from 2 3/4" buck and slugs is very stout, even trap loads. Can't imagine 3" shells in this puppy. It's more felt for me in the cheek bone versus the shoulder. I added a slip on butt pad, but to get down on it to see the front site required my face in hard contact with the stock.
I'd rather shoot my crescent butt plated 45-70 Winchester lever all day than 5 shots with this bad boy.
Time to investigate some 1 3/4" mini shells...

It’s hard to appreciate how small these things actually are. I like the super shorty double barrel or O/U offerings out there as they break down in to very small and easily packable components, but these things fold, as opposed to disassemble, and are very rapidly deployed as a result. They make a great pack or truck gun, that should you ever need something in a hurry, would save you many crucial seconds. Single shot capacity and not entirely pleasant to shoot with full power loads perhaps, but with mini shell buck shot or slugs they fill a very practical niche in my mind.

Go figure but no, a 4.5 pound 12 gauge isn't the funnest thing to shoot more than a couple times.
Yeah, it's not the recoil into the shoulder as much as the smack your cheekbone takes with this. Trying to shoulder and lower your face on the stock to pick up the front bead gives your face a good wallop. Even trap loads. I can confirm the longer Chiappa sub caliber inserts don't fit in this.
I did add a slip on recoil pad to add some LOP, but this little bugger is still pretty punishing even with trap loads.
Time to try some 1 3/4" shells.
Still a cool little shot gun for the collection.

Just curious what's preventing your Chiappa barrel inserts from fitting? I had to check again after your post, i have the 7" chiappa adapters and seem to fit just fine in my Trailhand. I'm assuming these are the the longer chiappa sub caliber inserts your talking about?

My Chiappa adapters were bought some time ago close to when they first released their x-caliber line of M6 survival rifle/shotgun combos and these ones measure 7", where i see all current Chiappa adapters available advertised as 8". If someone has recently purchased a new chiappa barrel insert could you confirm they are really 8 inch barrels now?
